Learning Outcomes
In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge as it applies to fabrics used to produce garments and accessories and includes skills and knowledge required to guide the use and handling of fabrics. It includes sourcing information from reference material and industry specialists as well as conducting simple tests to identify fabric types and properties. Activities will include identification methods and tests currently used in fashion related workplace in relation to fabric testing and performance.

Blended learning consisting of classroom activities and practical workshops.
Teaching Schedule
Week 1 Introduction to unit. Assessment Requirements. Look at Australian standards.
View Textile testing DVD.
Week 2 Fabric testing requirements. Discuss the use of blue and grey scales.
Demonstration of equipment to be used for testing.
Week 3 Fabric testing assignment. Select Knitted and Woven Fabrics for testing.
Prepare samples according to standards for testing. Commence testing.
Week 4 Continue testing fabrics and record results.
Week 5 Continue testing fabrics and record results.
Week 6 Complete fabric testing and collate results.
Answer fabric testing questions and hand in testing report.
Week 7 Testing of denim fabric samples. (Holistic project)
Week 8 Labelling requirements according to Australian standards.
Week 9 Care labelling requirements according to the standards.
Hand out labelling assignment.
Week 10 Children’s wear labelling requirements talk.

Week 11 Surface decoration of fabrics.
Research different finishing processes.

Overview of Assessment
Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.
This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.
As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.
PLEASE NOTE: work that has not been authenticated during class as your own work will not be considered for assessment.
Assessment Tasks
1. Fabric Performance Testing 30% :- Students will be required to conduct standard tests on two given fabrics and report on the results.
2. Fabric specification 10% :- Complete a specification for a given yarn and fabric. Oral presentation in class.
3. Care and Content labelling assignment 30% :- Demonstrate the ability to select a range of labels in accordance with Australian Standards.
4. Dyeing Questionnaire 10% :- View Textile Colouration Video and complete a questionnaire.
5. Dyeing report 10-% :- Report on results achieved when different fabrics are dyed with a range of dyes.
6. Fibre and Fabric Finishes 10% :- Research a given finishing process and present findings to class.
