Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage colour in a digital imaging workplace.

Element 1 Research history and apply theory of colour in a digital imaging context.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Identify colour theories/theory as it applies to the digital
imaging context using appropriate sources of information and standards .
1.2 Evaluate currency/credibility of information gathered and ensure research scope is sufficiently broad.
1.3 Examine how colour is created, defined and managed in contemporary digital imaging devices.
1.4 Investigate the areas of capture, display, output and archive spaces in contemporary digital imaging devices where colour management is critical to the production of a quality product .
1.5 Maintain accurate and comprehensive details of sources of information and standards.
 

Element:

Element 2 Identify appropriate colour management systems and strategies and apply to a workplace.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Identify and select appropriate colour management systems and strategies for specific digital imaging devices.
2.2 Evaluate suitability of selected colour management systems and strategies in terms of relevance and cost efficiency.
2.3 Adopt and adapt selected colour management systems and strategies to digital workplace.

Element 3 Review and update colour management strategies

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Review performance and assess impact of adapted colour management systems and strategies.
3.2 Develop systems to update and respond to future colour management systems and strategies as they arise from emerging technologies and workplace practices.

 

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to research, evaluate and determine the appropriate colour management strategy required for a range of photographic printing projects.

Students will have the knowledge to plan, coordinate and manage the accuracy, consistency and integrity of colour in their printing workflows to industry standard.

Other Resources

You will need to have access to data storage devices, computer with Bridge and current Photoshop software. You can access RMIT faciltiies within access hours or provide your own. You will also require access to camera and lighting equipment as required.


Overview of Assessment

Students are required to complete class tutorial exercises, participate in class discussions and research various applications of innovative imaging techniques. Students will also be required to produce proof sheets and within a workflow process, produce final screen and hard copy prints via a range of output mediums including lab, inkjet and darkroom for their assessment in this course.


Assessment Tasks

Semester 2 Assessment items include:
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Monitor Calibration
Calibrate monitor to ensure accurate representation of digital files.
Due - week 3
Soft Proof test
Set file up and apply a soft proof then produce a small test print
Due – week 4
Test Prints examining rendering intents, colour spaces & resolution
Produce a series of test prints to test rendering intents, colour spaces, correct application of profiles & resolution Due - week 13

 SUMMATIVE (GRADED) ASSESSMENT
Folio comprising of colour managed

Folio – 4 Prints
Produce a folio of four printed images from your own work which apply advanced colour management strategies.
The folio must contain both digital files as well as final pigmented inkjet prints.
Due –Week 16
