Course Description
The competency explores the descriptive and emotive nature of photo lighting describes the skills and knowledge required to produce creative and innovative photoimages using photo lighting principles. In this course you look at how determining appropriate lighting requirements for a range of subjects, both in the studio and on location, allows you to accurately portray or enhance your subject’s appearance. You look at emerging trends in the photoimaging industry and how to exploit creative and commercial opportunities. You also learn how to interpret and follow a brief and how best to interpret lighting requirements for that brief.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge of course content is assessed through participation in practical exercises, research assignments and through the application of learned skills and insights to your photography assignments.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered a essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessent tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this unit are graded.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT TASKS (ungraded):

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT TASKS (graded):
1. Final submission of 3 images (folio)
To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete each of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessment. The following three assignments also cover assessment for Research and exploit photoimaging trends (VART5951C ).
Each assignment has a research component and a practical component.
Part 1 – Research:
After assignment brief you are to research and submit a minimum of 6 images sourced from web, magazine and discussion with your teacher.
Part 2 – Capture:
Execute shoot in this class in the prescribed manner.
• Consult teacher.
• Book studio space, equipment.
• Organise props.
• Execute shoot.
• Post production.
NB. You are required to produce the necessary research documentation prior to beginning the practical part of the assignment
Final percentage is calculated from a total of 100 marks. Each assignment is worth 1/3 of the final mark.
Assignment 1 – Paper Theory. Due week 4
Assignment: A paper manufacturer requires a photograph to be reproduced as a large mural for its head office reception area. Its main area of output is for the print industry. The client has requested an “abstract approach” taken to this large scale visual. However, emphasis should be placed on the paper and/or ancillary uses thereof.
NB: Depth of field optional, but should be sufficient for massive enlargement.
Format: Horizontal.
Assignment 2 – Food Theory. Due week 8
A publisher requires a double page photograph for an editorial article on a major food corporation. The product to be featured is from its line of cheeses. The concept behind the shot is that cheese has been a basic food source throughout history and will remain so into the future. The photographic approach should have strong appetite appeal and thorough use of light and props. The image must convey a visual sense of the past or the future.
NB: Depth of field optional – should be appropriate to the style i.e. Editorial.
Format: “Gourmet Traveller” feature double page spread.
Brief assignment 3 – Self-portrait Theory, due week 12
A weekend colour supplement requires an editorial photograph for a double page spread to complement an article on ‘the artist within’. The shot has to evoke nostalgia, warmth, security, tenderness etc., or the complete opposite, depending on the photographer’s reading of the brief. Regardless of the interpretation, the result depends greatly on the emotive use of light to fulfil the brief.
NB: Depth of field – “appropriate” focus over the area shown in set-up.
Format: The Age ‘Good Weekend’ Saturday supplement double page spread.
