Course Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to interpret plans and client specifications and undertake basic architectural drafting to produce working drawings for retail and exhibition design spaces.
Most of this course will be presented face to face within scheduled class time. In most cases, work briefs will be started in class. It is strongly advised that students ensure regular attendance, for demonstration and/or explanation of work requirements and briefs to ensure that students gain the required underpinning knowledge.

Learning Outcomes
This unit requires the team member to demonstrate knowledge of and apply architectural drafting techniques to develop working drawings for store design, floor layouts exhibition designs and proposals in response to client briefs. Frontline visual merchandisers and visual merchandiser supervisors and managers are responsible for this role.
Details of Learning Activities
This unit (SIRRMER008A Produce working drawings) will be referred to as MKTG5868C Drafting in this program. Drafting will cover the skills and knowledge required to interpret plans/client specifications and undertake basic architectural drafting to produce industry standard working drawings for retail and exhibition design spaces.
Drafting will include class discussion and demonstration of the following:
1. Selection, use and care of drawing equipment & papers.
2. Occupational Health & Safety issues.
3. Various drawing concepts, procedures & techniques including, but not limited to; scales, lettering, line type, notation & symbols, dimensioning - i.e. the requisite underpinning knowledge & skills to produce industry standard (AS1100) working drawings for fixtures/fittings, retail and exhibition design spaces. These concepts & techniques will be covered and used in class.
4. Types of drawing & their uses.
5. Industry presentation standards, academic requirements & employability skills.
6. Where applicable, drawings will demonstrate a range of specified rendered commercial finishes, fixtures & fittings.
7. Discussion/demonstration of how drawings &/or research/reports must satisfy all the requirements of client/industry briefs.
Drawings of commercial environments and fixtures will be drawn using specified drawing equipment and freehand.
Drawings to be commenced in class & completed for homework.
Completed drawings to meet all to requirements of briefs & demonstrate required industry standard for drawing and presentation.
Drawings will be based upon specifications of client or simulated industry briefs.
Drawings to be modified in response to client requirements where applicable. Where appropriate, students will produce or do a portfolio/suite of drawings, and written report/test.
Students will undertake practical drawing, research and/or reporting exercises to develop their underpinning knowledge & skills related to drafting drawing for the Visual Merchandising industry.
Students will then be required to demonstrate competence with this underpinning knowledge & skill in a series of drawings, research and/or reporting exercises that will form the basis of their assessment for this course.
Drafting (SIRRMER008A Produce working drawings) will be run concurrently with Perspective (SIRRMER009A Produce Perspective Drawings, Plans and Elevations) and will therefore share a common course outline & assessment..

Overview of Assessment
Evidence of the following is essential:
• demonstrated correct selection and application of drawing tools and materials to produce working drawings according to the proposed design or client brief
• production of drawings for a visual merchandising project, including orthographic, isometric and axonometric drawings.
Assessment must ensure access to:
• a real or simulated work environment
• relevant documentation, such as project specification and brief
• drawing equipment and materials.
Progressive work on, and completion of projects may occur in scheduled class time, but also as part of blended/self-directed learning.
Students will also need to log on to Blackboard to access information, work requirements, and content.
The work requirements progressively increase in complexity and depth. Subsequent work builds upon knowledge, skills and competence gained from earlier work. To maximise your chances for successful completion of the course, it is strongly advised that students regularly attend classes and keep up to date. Please bring all your drawing equipment to each class as this will enable you to do the prescribed work and make the best use of your scheduled class time.
Assessment
The course will be graded by cumulative assessment throughout the whole year. Note: The mere submission of a work requirement does not in itself guarantee a pass or an assessment of “competent”. To gain a pass or to be assessed as competent, the submitted work must, at a minimum, be submitted on time, satisfy all requirements of the brief to the required standard. Students must successfully complete all assessment tasks to pass this course
Attendance
Students are strongly advised to attend classes regularly and to keep up to date in their work requirements. Regular attendance and participation in class will ensure that students will satisfy the requirements of the following point.
Authenticity and proof of authorship – How does a teacher know it really is your work?
Any work submitted by a student for assessment by their teacher must satisfy proof of authorship or authenticity – i.e. Your teacher must be satisfied that the work submitted by you is actually your work. Your teacher must see you engaged in the production of the work - commence, work on, complete, and/or discuss the particular work requirement with your teacher. Unless these conditions have been met, the teacher can refuse to accept and/or assess any work requirement as “your work”.

Put simply, do not copy/take another person’s work and pass it off as your own.
Working and collaborating with colleagues is a great way to learn together and teachers would enthusiastically encourage this. Attendance
The major learning experiences involve class activities, demonstrations of O.H.& S., the safe handling, use & care of equipment, correct preparation, drawing standards & techniques, maintenance of a safe working environment . It is strongly advised that students attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities so as to gain the underpinning knowledge required to ensure the maximum opportunity to achieve competence.
Work not seen in progress
If a student hands in any work that the teacher has never seen in class or discussed with the student prior to the submission, the teacher can refuse the work on the basis of authentication issues.
Late submissions
Late submissions may be considered at the teacher’s discretion, provided that:
a. A medical certificate has been produced; or
b. 48 hours notice is given re the inability to meet the nominated deadline; or
c. Special consideration forms have been completed.
Late submissions must be in consultation with the teacher and penalties may occur. If a student misses a submission deadline but submits the work within the working week, then that job requirement will only be eligible for a maximum grade of "pass PA" , providing the work is considered to be up to standard. work that is submitted after this period will not be accepted nor assessed, & will be recorded as a "fail NN".
