Course Description

This unit encompasses the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) guidelines for occupational health and safety. It describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to maintain a safe work environment for staff, customers and others. It involves observing basic safety and emergency procedures.

1. Observe basic safety procedures.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Follow and maintain safety procedures to achieve a safe work environment according to all relevant OHS legislation, including codes of practice, relating to particular hazards in the industry or workplace.
1.2 Identify and report unsafe working practices, including faulty plant and equipment according to store policy and procedures.
1.3 Manage dangerous goods and substances according to store policy and relevant legislation.
1.4 Identify potential manual handling risks and manage tasks according to store policy.
1.5 Report work-related incidents and accidents to designated personnel.
1.6 Demonstrate consultative processes and follow procedures for OHS.

2.1 Follow fire and emergency procedures, including store evacuation, according to store policy and legislation.

Details of Learning Activities

Learning Activities

You will participate in a range of activities in this course including.
Students will cut geometric shapes from Styrofoam using the hot wire cutter.
Students will construct a simple riser using foam and card.
Students will participate and learn the appropriate use of tools and equipment, and observe and implement O.H.S procedures at all times.
Students will design and manufacture a sign and icon.
Students will design and emboss a 3 panel Art Deco Screen

2 Demonstration of how to use the hot-wire cutter
Students will cut 3 geometric shaped templates, from grey back.
Students will use the templates and Styrofoam ,and cut the 3 shapes 4.
3 Brief 1. Students will manufacture a riser to be used in VMP, each team will manufacture a different size for all first year students to use as a set, for grouping of products. 1,3
4 Ongoing manufacture of the riser, and introduction to the next brief. 3.
5 Brief 2 the design and manufacture of a sign and icon for VMP, a list of appropriate products will be discussed. 4.
6 Ongoing manufacture of signage, the size of the sign, template production, letter cutting, paint application. 4

8 Fix lettering to the background, spacing and layout considerations ,adhesives and manufacture of the icon .complete both today. 3,4
9 Brief 3. the design and manufacture of an Art Deco Screen, to be used in VMP, students will have produced thumbnail sketches in History. 5
10 Demonstration of the embossing technique, map out the design, and begin the embossing 5
11 Students should complete the screens today 5.
12 Brief 3a using given templates, students will produce 3 small embossed images on metal.
These small images will be used collectively as a group display in VMP 5
13 As above, should finish today.
14 Brief 4. Students will produce a framed montage, reference Bombo, images will be shown. This is a stand alone piece, no product is required to be included. 1,4
15 Ongoing production, coloured and textured papers will be supplied, multiple layers will be used to achieve depth and perspective 1,4
16 Students should complete task today.

• reads, interprets and applies manufacturer instructions for storage and use of hazardous goods
• knows store policies and procedures with regard to emergency situations, evacuation, or accident and illness in the store.
