Course Description

This unit is based on the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) guidelines and describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to maintain store safety in a retail environment.

This course is delivered in combination with Design & Construct Props MKTG5873C

1. Inform team members.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Clearly and accurately explain store policy and procedures in regard to OHS and emergency procedures to team members.
1.2 Ensure access for team members to store OHS policy and procedures.
1.3 Clearly and accurately explain relevant provisions of OHS legislation and codes of practice to team members.
1.4 Regularly provide clear and accurate information on identified hazards and risk control procedures to team members.


2. Involve team members.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Provide opportunities and processes for team members to consult and contribute on OHS issues according to store policy.
2.2 Promptly resolve issues raised or refer to relevant personnel according to store policy.
2.3 Promptly convey outcomes of issues raised on OHS matters to team members.


3. Monitor and maintain a safe work environment.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Implement store policy and procedures with regard to identification, prevention and reporting of potential hazards.
3.2 Take prompt action to deal with hazardous events according to store policy.
3.3 Investigate unsafe or hazardous events to identify cause and report any inadequacies in risk control measures or resource allocation for risk control to relevant personnel.
3.4 Implement and monitor control measures to prevent recurrence and minimise risks of unsafe and hazardous events according to store policy and the hierarchy of control.
3.5 Handle and store hazardous goods according to store policy and OHS regulations.
3.6 Maintain equipment according to store policy and OHS regulations.
3.7 Monitor team performance to ensure use of safe manual handling techniques.


4. Implement emergency procedures.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Implement store emergency policy and procedures promptly in the event of an emergency.


5. Identify need for OHS training.

Performance Criteria:

.1 Identify OHS training needs, specifying gaps between OHS competencies required and those held by team members.
5.2 Organise and arrange training according to store policy


6. Maintain OHS records.

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Complete and maintain OHS records regarding occupational injury and disease according to store policy and legislative requirements.
6.2 Use information from records to identify hazards and monitor risk control procedures according to store policy.

Details of Learning Activities

Learning Activities
Students will manufacture timber frames and stretch and prime canvases ready for retail backdrops.
2. Students will illustrate 2 canvases, one using the Trompe L”Oile technique depicting faux finishes, and the second one is to be influenced by 50,s fashion illustrators.
3. Students will manufacture 3 dimensional props, merchandisers for specific product categories and or promotional themes.
4.Students will select and maintain mannequins for given promotional themes , events and locations
5.Students will ensure that O.H.S procedures and safe working practices are adhered to at all times.

1 Introduction to the semesters work and an explanation of the individual job briefs.
This course is also directly supportive of VMP 2, front ,interior and off campus installations. Production for Open Day is also supported by this course 1.1
2 Some teams will begin production on internal window briefs today, you will have been given installation dates and you need to manage your studio time to ensure that your work is completed by that date 1.1 1.2
3 Ongoing production. Students that are not working on windows will begin brief 1. The production of 2 timber frames, stretch and apply canvas to the frames and prime ready for illustration. 1.1 1.2
4 Ongoing production , One canvas is to be used for 50,s fashion illustration and the second is to be used for trompe L “Oil [illusionary art]. Demonstrations of both styles will occur, and previous samples will be shared. 1.1 1.2
5 Ongoing production. Some teams may begin production on front windows today. Individual construction styles will be addressed.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills and will include:
- Practical tasks, a major project and a short test
- direct observation including exploration of and experimentation with techniques
- written and/or oral questioning and discussion to assess knowledge and understanding
- completion of an art journal and/or portfolio including personal reflection and feedback
- direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence…

Please note: All Assessment tasks need to be completed before competency is achieved. A number of tasks will be formative to show your progress and development of skills and knowledge throughout the semester. The final task will be summative to provide a level of performance in addition to your competency.
