Course Description

This unit identifies the knowledge and skills needed to enable young people to participate in the decision-making that affect their lives
It describes ‘power with’ community development processes with young people

Performance Criteria:

1  Support groups to monitor and record progress
2  Assist groups to identify outcomes and consequences (intended or unintended) of their actions on an on-going basis
3  Evaluate strategies and group processes
4  Provide reports of outcomes as appropriate to stakeholders and within the organisation
5  Celebrate achievements, including personal development, skills development and social change

1  Identify and note young people’s issues, needs or interests in community issues
2  Encourage and support young people to identify the commonality of their issues, needs and interests

4  Provide structured or unstructured opportunities for young people with similar interests or needs
5  Encourage and support young people to identify relationships between their issues / interests and social structures

Performance Criteria:

1  Ensure young people have the relevant skills and knowledge to operate in a collective way, e.g. knowledge shortfalls, meeting skills, auditing skills and knowledge
2  Map and monitor youth participation processes, particularly decision-making and inclusion processes of groups
3  Support, encouragement and opportunities are provided to young people to enable them to:
• meet and work effectively together in common interest groups
• promote / publicise groups to enable broader youth participation where appropriate
• express and explore their views and identify issues of common concern
• explore options for addressing issues and needs collectively within existing structures and in revised structures
• use group processes to generate ideas, evaluate and select strategies for taking collective action
• plan the selected strategies, including actions, resources, timelines and responsibilities required
• identify the information, skills and resources that are already available and required to take action
• access or provide available resources and support on an ongoing basis

1  Identify other stakeholders interested in the issue or strategy

Learning Outcomes


Undertaking study in this unit will enable you to develop the skills and knowledge to support groups of young people in taking action to meet their needs or responding to community issues.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this unit enables participants to gain skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to their workplace while being encouraged to share current work practices. Assessment tasks involve team and individual projects and written assessment including questions and case studies. Based on your individual learning plan, you will be offered a number of learning strategies including workshop attendance, project work development and workplace support to your assessment needs for this program.


Assessment Tasks

For this course you will be assessed using the following methods:

  • UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE QUESTION -To research a range of materials and address the set questions by discussing with peers and documenting conclusions drawn. Discussion and reflection to be focused on how Youth Work concepts and principles covered in the readings and workshops apply in the context of developing and supporting a community of practice. Due April 18th. 
  • RESEARCH PAPER -As part of this assessment task you will be required to read the policy framework “Positive pathways for Victoria’s vulnerable young people” (located on USB) and reflect on the implications of this framework on your current work practice Due September 26th. 
  • EVIDENCE PORTFOLIO A compilation of evidence examples of the students’ roles and responsibilities within the youth work program and of work undertaken within their own community/organization. Final due date: November.
