Course Description

This uit describes the knowledge and skills required to monitor and upgrade organisation approaches to young people with highly complex problems.

Develop support programs for young people.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Assess specific needs of the young person and match to an  existing program
1.2 Employ appropriate communication techniques to engage young person and to address specific needs
1.3 Consult relevant community organisations to identify available support programs that meet specific needs of clients
1.4 Undertake appropriate work to ensure a thorough knowledge of content, purpose and access protocols of exisitng programs
1.5 Provide relevant information to client as appropriate.

Ensure that young people with complex needs receive appropriate services.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Implement procedures to ensure indications of physical, emotional, psychological or sexual abuse are identified and addressed
2.2 Define approrpiate proceudres and put in place to minimise effects of an aggressive or abusive behaviour of clients including identifying:
- 'at risk' behaviour patterns
- a range of alternative strategies
- quick response actions
- support behaviours
- protocols of behaviour
2.3 Employ appropriate approaches and language to enable clients to express their ideas in a range of ways

3.1 Design and implement appropriate referral systems and procedures to ensure special needs of clients can be addressed
3.2 Identify and access support factilities required to optimise client access to specialist services
3.3 Ensure support and advocacy services provided reflect organisation procedures, respect the young person's rights and are appropriate to cultural and other individual circumstances.
3.4 Consult with relevant professionals and service providers to ensure broad and comprehensive client service delivery.

Monitor and upgrade support provided by the organisation.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Reguarly review information and srvices provided to cleints to assess continuing relevance and effectiveness
4.2 Periodically review assessment, support and referral systems used within the agency
4.3 Hold approrpiate debriefings with workers for the purposes of counselling, identifying training needs and evaluating client service delivery
4.4 Identify problems experienced by workers, assess appropriate adjustments to service delivery and negotiate with relevant staff
4.5 Provide support and spervision to other workers as required in accordance with organisation procedures
4.6 Arrange regular debriefings with asociated organsiations and service providers adn produce adn provide reprots in accordance with orgnasation procedures.

Details of Learning Activities

Classes are scheduled on the last Friday of every month throughout the year. Students will be given readings in preparation for each workshop. Led by industry leaders, these workshops take students through a variety of in-class tasks and scenarios with the intention of extending their current working knowledge of Youth Work practice. The work undertaken in class is invaluable for the assessment tasks.
It is expected that time spent out of the classroom will be dedicated to completing the various assessment tasks listed below.
Students will be expected to make use of the Learning Hub as part of their on-line studies which are part of the course.


Teaching Schedule

Students meet the last Friday of every month to undertake a workshop which will focus on each of the competencies.
An RPL process is undertaken with each student within the first 6 weeks of the course.
After each workshop students will be given an underpinning knowledge question to complete for the following workshop. The other assessments are completed throughout the year.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this unit enables participants to gain skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to their workplace while being encouraged to share current work practices. Assessment tasks involve team and individual projects and written assessment including questions and case studies. Based on your individual learning plan, you will be offered a number of learning strategies including workshop attendance, project work development and workplace support to your assessment needs for this program.

Students will be involved in a variety of assessment tasks throughout the course, including:
• Simulations
• A major project brief
• A final project report
• Underpinning knowledge questions and answers (one per month)
• A research essay
• An evidence portfolio
• Workshop participation.
