Course Description

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to design, provide and promote a supporting structure and environment to enable effective and viable leadership to be provided within the community.

This unit is intended for application within a community work or community development work context.

Details of Learning Activities

You will be involved in learning activities in a day long workshop which will include group discussions and group work activities based on workshop content. You will also be required to undertake independent studies. Reflection on your own work context is a significant aspect of this course and you will be given opportunities to discuss and think about your own practice.

Where the teacher has used a powerpoint presentation during the workshop, these resources and other learning activities and handouts will be made available to enroled students post the workshop via electronic methods.


Overview of Assessment

This course requires you to demonstrate your knowledge and application of skills in relation to working with community members to develop leadership capacities that will enhance their ability to lead and work within groups to collaboratively undertake project activities. Assessment includes written responses to underpinning knowledge questions, 3rd party evidence and participation in a scenario based in the workshop. Assessment is ongoing throughout the course.


Assessment Tasks

For this course you will be required to complete 2 assessment tasks:

Task 1: You will undertake a written report detailing how you will identify and support potential community leaders in your project work. You will be required to list and elaborate on these supports listing acitivities such as individual mentoring or group and/or skills based training.

Task 2: During the workshop, you will participate in a scenario whereby you will develop a series of capacity building activities for members of a fictional community project group in order to develop their skills in specific aspects of project work. You will need to prepare a skills audit identifying specific skills evident both individually and collectively, skills for development and step by step details of how the training will occur. You will also need to demonstrate how you would evaluate the effectiveness of your training plans and implementation.
