Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to create 3D digital models.

This unit is a prerequisite for:
• CUFANM401A Prepare 3D digital models for production.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 With reference to production documentation , clarify
       requirements and purpose for 3D digital models
1.2 In consultation with relevant personnel , clarify work
       flow sequences to ensure that production schedule
       deadlines are met
1.3 Select software that best suits the type of production
       and delivery platform for which 3D digital models are
       being created
1.4 Gather and analyse reference materials to help with
       visualisation of 3D model

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Use software features to block out models to
       determine correct proportions in relation to
       reference materials
2.2 Manipulate software features to apply basic lighting
       and shaders as require
2.3 Ensure that models’ topology allows appropriate
       deformation, as required
2.4 Progressively refine and check integrity of models
       until they meet design requirements
2.5 Submit models to relevant personnel for comment
       on whether production requirements have been
       met and make final adjustments as required
2.6 Render and output models in required format and
       submit to relevant personnel by agreed deadlines
2.7 Make back-up copies of files and complete
       workplace  documentation according to enterprise
       procedure


Learning Outcomes


3D modellers working on relatively simple projects apply the skills and knowledge described in this unit. From reference material and established designs, they create 3D models using whatever software is applicable to the production.


Details of Learning Activities

The learning activities include:

  • In class computer based exercises
  • Creation of a 3D model based on and running consecutively with your 1st sem. "Soft furnishing solutions" project
    (this will be executed using AutoCAD 2012)
  • Creation of a 3D model based on and running consecutively with your 1st sem. "Studio Practice 1" project
    (this will be executed using Revit Architecture 2012)
  • Group discussion during class time encouraged
  • Self directed learning
  • On-line quizzes

This subject will commence in weeks 1 to 5 using AutoCAD 2012.  For the remainder of the semester we will then use
"Revit Architecture 2012" so as to give an all rounded knowledge of drafting programs in preparation for current industry.

Some learning activities will include a self-directed learning approach.  Self-directed learning refers to organised teacher-
directed learning activities that you will undertake independently, either a individuals or with other students.  This may
include workplace research, library assignments, field work and work placements.

Other Resources

Although not mandatory, it is highly recommended that you have access to to either "AutoCAD 2011" or "AutoCAD 2012"
on a PC at home.  Access to "Revit Architecture 2012" is also recommended.  Note, files worked on in Revit 2012 are
not backward compatible (with Revit 2011).
Both AutoCAD and Revit can be downloaded from RMIT and burnt to DVD - or copied to a 4Gb USB thumb drive.

Note there is now a windows 32 bit version of the software (for "Windows XP", "Window 7, 32 bit").
There is also a 64 bit version specifically for "Window 7- 64 bit"
There is also now a AutoCAD Mac version (no Revit Mac version available).  However, if you intend on loading the Mac
version of AutoCAD at home, be aware the interface and operation may be a little confusing
At RMIT you will be using the PC version (not Mac).

Also not mandatory, but highly recommended is a memory stick for backing up of class work (2Mb size min).

Overview of Assessment

Evidence of the following is essential:
• creation of 3D digital models that:
   •  demonstrate efficient use of geometry and attention to detail
   •  meet design requirements
• collaborative approach to work
• ability to meet deadlines.


Assessment Tasks

During week 1 to 5 inclusive, you will be required to:

  • Create a 3D model of a building based on a project briefed to you in "Specify Soft Furnishing Solutions".
  • Using an existing floor plan supplied to you, alter and set up scaled floor plan for printing
  • Create a number of internal elevations of the building
  • Create a number of "internal perspectives"
  • Create a piece of joinery which is to be included in the elevation, plan and perspective

Note, in order to "emulate the workplace" as well as minimise your workload this year, this project will be the base for
both CAD and Soft Furnishings.  Hence in Week 7, the combined hand-in will be less.

During weeks 6 to 8 inclusive we will be starting learn using Revit Architecture 2012.

During Weeks 9 to 16 inclusive, you will be required to:

  • Create a 3D model of a building based on a project briefed to you in "Studio Practice 1"
  • Given a floor plan, set up the drawing for printing both a site plan and floor plan
  • Create a item of joinery in 3D and create both plan and elevation views
  • Create an internal elevation with minimal rendering and lights

Demonstration of the above without assistance will render you competent in this course
Your final submission will along with your progress throughout the course will govern
the "degree" of competency based on the "assessment matrix" (see below)
