Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare photo images for integration into an interactive media sequence or product.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Performance Criteria:

1. Source and select appropriate photographic images according to requirements of photographic project brief
2. Discuss selection of images with relevant personnel
3. Assess scanner features to ensure that outcomes will meet the requirements of brief
4. Operate scanner according to manufacturer specifications
5. Select scanner settings to ensure image capture meets production requirements
6. Transfer and store photographic image files to a computer using standard naming conventions

12. Check photographic images for fitness of purpose to comply with brief
13. Transfer and store photographic image files to a computer using standard naming conventions

Learning Outcomes


This role may be assigned to a graphic artist or, in a larger project, to a photographer who works closely with a programmer or interactive media author to publish required images.

Home computer - It is advisable that you have a computer at home on which to do your
self directed work
Software - "Photoshop" is not supplied to students for home use. It is encouraged that
studets purchase a copy for home use for the duration of their course. Student versions
cost around $200.
Self paced online tutorial - If you find you are struggling with Photoshop, as an RMIT
student you will have access to the Lynda.com website tutorials. This can only be done for
free via the link below:

Building 8, level 7 - 24 hour, 7 day a week access is available to the "open labs" in building
8 if you require the use of a computer. Booking may be required (and will ensure you have
a PC for you)
Building 94, level 5, room 13 will be available most nights after 6pm till midnight (refer to to
timetable located on door of room). Note, an "access" form will need to be filled in and
approved prior to use of this room.
During the course, WMV files will be uploaded into the relevant blackboard folder for
assistance


Overview of Assessment

Evidence of the following is essential:
• ability to use digital imaging software to prepare high quality photo images that satisfy the requirements of a range of briefs
• efficient operation of a scanner and digital camera to capture images.


Assessment Tasks

Task 1: Concept Mind Map

Create a mind map/ brainstorm of the concept or style of your interior perspective.

Submission (There are 2 parts to this submission) Session 4

The following is required;

1. An A3 page in size, to include;
- images
- description of concept
- name and student number
- title

1. Digital submission of 1 x A3 PDF file (the file must be named according to email etiquette, note file type required)
T:\Secure\Submissions/2013-sem1/IDD/Photoshop_1st year_1(A,B,C,D)
Create a folder in your H drive called your student number ie. s1234567
In the folder put all the files for assessment and in the last class drop the whole folder into the T drive.
You cannot create or rename a folder in the T drive.


Task 2: Materials Board
Project Outline
In this exercise you will be producing a digital materials board to accompany your interior perspective (Task 3_Interior Perspective).

All the images you collect for this task you will then use in the 3rd task, the interior perspective, so please store all the images in a file that you can access later ie your “h” drive

The idea is to create a theme for your interior perspective, and to create a materials board of the theme. Research furniture, wall coverings, colour and lighting and include an image that was your inspiration for your room.

You are printing out a copy of the board so remember that all your images must be of a good resolution

 The following is required;

The board is to be A3 in size, and include;
- images
- material finishes
- legend of materials and finishes
- name and student number
- title

Please note you must include all of these elements on your board.

Submission (There are 2 parts to this submission)    Session 8

2. Digital submission of the .PSD file (note file type required)

Task 3: Interior Perspective
Project Outline
Using the theme and the elements you have collected your Materials Board (Task 2) to create an interior perspective, or a finished room in that style.

Using the file myspace.jpg or supply your own image (conditions apply)
Construct a finished room using the following elements;
- break apart room and apply surface finish of colour, wallpaper and flooring
- Include furniture elements apply them to space considering perspective and shadows
- place a rug on floor
- place an artwork on wall
- define lighting source
- define scale by placing figures in space

- Title of project on board
- Name and student number on board

Submission (There are 3 parts to this submission, make sure you do all 3)Session 8
 

1. 1 x A3 size printed copy to be handed in class

2. Digital submission of the .PSD file in the drop box (note file type required)

The file will be assessed following these guidelines;
- Correct set up and use of layers, including the naming of layers
- Correct quality of image, and images placed
- Attention to detail when selecting images with tools such as the lasso etc
- Application of surface finish of colour, wallpaper and flooring
- Include furniture elements apply them to space considering perspective and shadows
- a rug on floor
- an artwork on wall
- An indication of source of lighting
- Use of text for legend
- Title of project on board
- Name and student number on board
- Correct page size (A3)


Assessment Matrix

You will receive feedback with verbal and/or written evaluation of your progress within
class time. The submitted projects will be assessed with written feedback as well as a
quality indicator that relates to separate components of the project and the overall
outcome. At the completion of the course, grading will be offered in addition to, and after,
competency based assessment.

Attendance
The major learning experience involves studio based exercises, demonstration and production. It
is strongly advised that students attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning
activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency.

complete any piece of assessment by the due date, you will need to apply for an extension.
