Course Description

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to develop and evaluate strategies for transport and logistics enterprises in accordance with relevant regulatory requirements and workplace procedures. This includes analysing the enterprises internal and external operating environment, developing strategies to maximise outcomes for the enterprise, implementing and evaluating strategies, and responding to changes within the transport and logistics environment. Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.

1 Analyse the enterprise's internal and external operating environment

1.2 External factors, including legislative requirements, changes to technology, domestic and international market variability and political constraints impinging upon the operation of the enterprise are researched and analysed
1.3 Impending changes to internal operations or the external environment are determined
1.4 An analysis is undertaken of the enterprise's capacity to operate within the defined environment, outlining opportunities to improve market share and/or positioning
1.5 Recommendations for changes to workplace structure, systems, procedures, workforce composition, market orientation and the like are generated and documented in consideration of internal and external analysis and the enterprise's goals and values


3 Implement and evaluate strategies

3.1 Performance benchmarks for measuring the effectiveness of the change strategies are implemented
3.2 Responsibilities for implementing the change strategies are clearly defined and allocated to designated personnel
3.3 Implementation processes are monitored and, where required, adjustments to the strategies are made
3.4 Performance of the enterprise in relation to the identified benchmarks is regularly monitored and reviewed and adjustments are made where required

4 Respond to changes within the transport and logistics environment

Performance Criteria:

4.1 The nature, extent and impact of any issues or changes upon the operations of the enterprise are identified
4.2 Relevant information is processed to establish priorities and responses for dealing with issues or changes
4.3 Strategies are generated/adjusted and controlled to meet changes in the transport and logistics environment
4.4 Liaison is initiated and maintained with organisations/individuals affected by changed operational practice

Details of Learning Activities

A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative classroom based activities.
The self-paced activities will be delivered thought various technology platforms and include your contribution to wikis and discussion threads, reflective journals, quizzes and interactive sessions.

The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated/real workplace environment.

Students will study concepts and applications pertaining to develop operational procedures in class sessions, using tutorial and prescribed exercises and assessment work.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including in-class exercises, problem-solving exercises, assignments, group or individual projects, presentations and written or practical tests, as well as homework activities. Other activities may be workplace-based or simulate work practices. These may include the production of technical requirements documents, direct observation of workplace practices and the presentation of a portfolio of evidence. This portfolio may include documents, photographs, video and/or audio files.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.   Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.

All businesses should have an annual strategic plan, something to guide the activities for the year, to nominate priorities, to reflect on the current market and see how trends and changes in the market place may affect the activities of the business for the next year; like a road map to follow. So for this unit we have prepared you to create and present an outline of your Business strategies using the range of activities you have already discussed during class activities & Guide to Writing a Business Strategies template provided in blackboard

The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate skills and competencies in preparing and delivering a Business presentation in class in front of their peers. In order to successfully implement an overview of business strategies you must get organisational buy-in. This presentation will allow you to develop the skills of ‘selling’ your business strategies to the organisation.
Prepare a presentation on the subject matter as outlined by the teacher during weeks 1- 14.
Using the PowerPoint template provided create a presentation outlining the key points of the plan – each member of the group must present an equal part of the presentation. In groups of not more than 4 students you will be required to present a short, 10-15-minute presentation on your plan. You should articulate each element of your plan and why that element is important to your business.
Given you have only 15 minutes – you may not be able to include all elements of your report – however you should endeavour to include the most ‘mission critical’ elements.

We are expecting that while studying this unit you will be continuously gathering information and storing this within your portfolio. By doing this you should have gathered a range of information (both physical and electronic), that will assist in preparing your presentation and writing this assignment. We expect that this stored information and resources, from our experience, is then able to be used for both future assignments and future workplace problem solving.

Assessment Task 3 –Strategies Written Report (45%)

The purpose of this assessment is for students to develop written report skills on the subject matter in a business like format.

The students are to create a written report on the subject matter in a business like format as outlined by the teacher throughout the semester.

By doing this you should have gathered a range of information (both physical and electronic), that will assist in writing this assignments. We expect that this stored information and resources, from our experience, is then able to be used for both future assignments and future workplace problem solving.
