Course Description

In this course you will apply photographic styling techniques to visual merchandising arrangements.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this unit are graded.

To demonstrate competency in this course, you need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.


The following brief comprises assessment work from the C5177 – Diploma of Visual Merchandising Style Merchandise for Photography. You will be working collaboratively with up to 3 Stylists to complete your task.

*There are two parts to the assessments: RESEARCH and CAPTURE.


You are required to produce the necessary documentation prior to CAPTURE.

Formative Assessment.

Assessment Task Part 1:
After the brief you are to research and submit a minimum of 6 images sourced from web, magazine and discussion with your teacher and stylist.

Assessment Task Part 2:
Execute location shoot during class in the prescribed manner.

Consult teacher.
Work collaboratively with Stylist
Book equipment.
Organise props & location.
Execute shoot.
Post production.

You will be required to team up with a photography student (assigned) who will work with you to achieve the desired result/look and directed by your collaborative efforts. There will be a total of 5 weeks in which to complete this assessment.

Look at the current fashion publications, catalogues, brochures etc., to get a feeling of what the agency, essentially the art director, wants.

You must collaborate with the photographer to produce a concept and final photo that satisfies the requirements of the brief.

The major learning experience involves studio based exercises, demonstration and production. It is strongly advised that students attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency.
