Course Description

In this course you will cover the skills and knowledge required to exploit creative and innovative options in the production of Photoimages using a variety of imaging technologies and processes.
You will gain skills in resolving complex visual communications problems and interact with a range of imaging technologies (including analogue, digital, hybrid, traditional and emerging). The selection, application and adaptation of these imaging technologies support you in the creation of innovative images.

RMIT has a range of equipment available for students to use to complete their assignments including access to RMIT labs with computers, server storage space and required software to complete exercises and assignments. Many students prefer to also have their own personal computer with current Photoshop, Acrobat, Bridge and editing software as well as personal data storage devices (generally a minimum of two)
 


Overview of Assessment

Assessment tasks include a series of exercises applying visual effects and compositing techniques to produce innovative images. These include (but are not limited to) mapping textures, advanced extraction and masking techniques in addition to compiling a collection of works together in a calendar.
Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises and discussions and through the application of skills and insights learned from the course content to a series of projects requiring the adaptation of contemporary digital imaging technologies which allow you to develop unique and innovative images.
 


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessment to a satisfactory standard.

Produce a folio of 2 composited photorealistic images employing advanced compositing and visual effects skills.

The folio must contain both a final flattened image for display as well as the digital files with all the working layers in a psd file. The finished files must contain the full range of tones demonstrating appropriate application of processing, enhancement and output techniques.

In addition to the final folio piece students are required to prepare & submit a concept presentation as well as present progress drafts of the folio piece.

 

 

 


Assessment Task 1: Scale folio piece
Due date: Week 7 – 24th March 2015

Students are to create a folio image combining two or more images of differing scale that are to appear photorealistic. The manipulation & representation of scale is to be explored within the image to add underlying layers of meaning to the concept of the image.

Students are to decide on their subject, shoot/gather the source files and then using masking and compositing techniques to blend the source files into a seamless photorealistic image.

Assessment Task 2: Alternate Reality folio piece
Due date: Week 15 – 26th May 2015

Students are to combine at least 3 separate source files to present an alternate view of the world, future, past or present.
Students are to decide on their subject, shoot/gather the source files and then using masking and compositing techniques to blend the source files into a seamless photorealistic image.
