Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge you will require to construct removable orthodontic appliances. The appliances you construct would be used in industry to move patients teeth into a position that will provide better function and aesthetics. You will construct a range of appliances to cater for the various needs of a patient. All procedures are carried out in accordance with work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, state/territory legislative requirements and organisation policy.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Select techniques, materials and equipment for trimming, finishing and polishing that are appropriate to the type and materials of the appliance
3.2 Trim and finish the baseplate to the thickness and coverage required
3.3 Finish and polish metal components to leave surfaces that are free of sharp edges and irregularities
3.4 Evaluate the finished appliance
3.5 Decontaminate the appliance according to infection control guidelines
3.6 Place the appliance in a sealed container for dispatch
 


Learning Outcomes


On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the construction of removable orthodontic appliances. You will develop your manual dexterity bending wires of varied gauges to facilitate various functions, coupled with processing acrylic in a range of colours to appeal to the aesthetic needs of patients.

Teaching Schedule

As per your timetable located on Blackboard under the relevant Group - The class is scheduled for delivery to the second year APPRENTICE group (DT2) on Monday August 3 in the Lecture theatre of Building 154 RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne) Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

Following the delivery of the theory class, practical exercises will be undertaken in the laboratory.

Class schedules are detailed in the timetables provided on Blackboard (subject to change at the discrection of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email);

Practical classes will be delivered in the simulated environment at RMIT where the Teacher will provide demonstration and assistance as you construct the following appliances.

  • Hawley retainer
  • Expansion plate
  • Buccal retractor
  • Recurrent Bow retainer

The TIER 2 exercises are made available if you complete all of the previous exercises and are seeking further practice prior to the assessments. The time guides for the TIER 2 exercises are reduced and require a ’self-managed approach’ to complete the exercise.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.

You will be assessed on both the essential knowledge and the demonstration of essential skills through;

Completion of practical exercises - including detailed self reflection of each exercise
Practical exam
Theory exam


 


Assessment Tasks

To undertake practical exercises and /or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

  • Please note these are also WH&S requirements for laboratory safety. In appropriate practical class attire (Protective clothing for legs - if shorts, must cover knees, lab coat, safety glasses)
  • Fully covered in leather(not suede) footwear
  • Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
  • No artificial fingernails to be worn
  • The wearing of henna is acceptable.
  • Short, clean fingernails (no nail polish or artificial nails)
  • No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
  • All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing
  • A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercises or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake assessment at a later date.

You will attempt the following practical exercises under supervision of the teacher and you will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines outlined in the practical exercise book

Upon completion of an exercise and prior to submission for assessment, all exercises undertaken in the practical classes will require you to provide a detailed reflection of your own work focussing on areas of the appliance that were successful as well as areas that could be improved upon next time.

The practical exam will take place under supervision in the simulated working environment at RMIT. The exam will take place under exam conditions and you will be given details of the requirements and assessment guidelines in the practical book available in class and on BlackBoard.

  1. PRAC EXAM - Hawley retainer

The theory exam will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions.

  1. THEORY EXAM - Construct orthodontic appliances - pass mark 60%


Assessment Matrix

To achieve a grade of CA (Competency Achieved) for the unit HLTDT514D/DENT5788C Construct orthodontic appliances you are required to obtain a pass result  for all of the following theoretical and practical assessments.

  1. PRAC EXAM - Hawley retainer - DT2: Tuesday September 29.
         
  2. THEORY EXAM - Construct orthodontic appliances - pass mark 60%  DT2: Tuesday September 29 @9am  

Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in an NYC (not yet competent) result for unit HLTDT514D/DENT5788C Construct orthodontic appliances. An NYC (not yet competent result will be entered in the student record. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.

(The assessment process must be finalised and a result entered by November 27 2015)
