Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for you to reline (adding a new fitting surface to a denture), rebase (extensive changes to the base of denture), repair and modify removable prostheses (re-fitting broken parts of a denture to return it to function). The different facets of this unit of competence are very common techniques that you will use whilst working in the Dental Industry.  
The All procedures are carried out in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, state/territory legislative requirements and organisation policy.

5.1 Trim denture or appliance to relevant anatomical outline or required extension of the base 5.2 Examine the tissue fitting surface and remove any processing anomalies and sharp surfaces 5.3 Refine and polish surfaces and produce required contours 5.4 Evaluate the finished prosthesis 5.5 Decontaminate the appliance according to infection control guidelines 5.6 Place the appliance in a sealed container for dispatch


Learning Outcomes


On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the process involved in the repair of a range of different dentures including full and partial dentures. The modifications you will make include a denture reline; creating a new fitting surface for the denture that provides a better for the patient as well as replacing an existing tooth on a denture - due to fracture.

Teaching Schedule

The class is scheduled for delivery to the APPRENTICE group (DT1) on 11th July 2106 in the Boardroom of Building 154 RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne) Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change. Following the delivery of the theory class, practical exercises will be undertaken in the laboratory. Class schedules are detailed in the timetables provided on Blackboard (subject to change at the discretion of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email); DT1 - Monday - Friday (2week block) Practical classes will be delivered in the simulated environment at RMIT where the Teacher will provide demonstration and assistance as you construct the following appliances. You will be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.

You will be assessed on both the essential knowledge and the demonstration of essential skills through;

Completion of practical exercises - including detailed self-reflection or each exercise
Practical exam
Theory exam


Assessment Tasks

You will attempt the following practical exercises under supervision of the teacher and you will be graded with either a CA (Competency Achieved ) or NYC (Not Yet Competent) according to the assessment guidelines outlined in the practical exercise book; in accordance with the training package elements & essential skills. F/- Denture repair-/F Denture repairP/- Denture repairDenture tooth repair-/F Denture reline The TIER 2 exercises are made available if you complete all of the previous exercises and are seeking further practice prior to the assessments. The time guides for the TIER 2 exercises are reduced and require a ’self-managed approach’ to complete the exercise. TIER 2 - F/- or -/F Denture repairTIER 2 - Denture tooth repair Upon completion of an exercise and prior to submission for assessment, all exercises undertaken in the practical classes will require you to provide a detailed reflection of your own work focussing on areas of the appliance that were successful as well as areas that could be improved upon next time. The practical exam will take place under supervision in the simulated working environment at RMIT. The exam will take place under exam conditions and you will be given details of the requirements and assessment guidelines in the practical book available in class and on BlackBoard. PRAC EXAM - Full denture repair The theory exam will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions. Repair and modify dentures and appliances/ Waxes, Abrasives & Polishing Agents - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60% Acrylic Resins - Theoretical exam - pass mark 60%


Assessment Matrix

To achieve a grade of CA (Competency Achieved) for the unit HLTDT518D Repair and modify dentures and appliances, you are required to obtain a pass result (CA) for the following theoretical and practical assessments that are used to measure; elements, performance criteria, essential knowledge and essential skills as outlined in the health training package. Repair and modify dentures and appliances theoretical examAcrylic Resins theoretical exam PRAC EXAM - Full denture repair Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in an NYC (not yet competent) result for unit HLTDT518D Repair and modify dentures and appliances. An NYC (not yet competent) result will be entered in the student record.This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment. The scheduled dates for the assessments are as follows; Apprentice DT1: September 20th (The assessment process must be finalised and a result entered by November 18th 2016)

In appropriate practical class attire (Protective clothing for legs - if shorts, must cover knees, lab coat, safety glasses) Fully covered in leather(not suede) footwear Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover. No artificial fingernails to be worn The wearing of henna is acceptable. Short, clean fingernails No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercises or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake assessment at a later date.
