Course Description

This unit describes the communication and work practice skills and knowledge required to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the health industry context. It deals specifically with cross-cultural awareness and issues involving working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, organisations and communities

1.1       Acknowledge and respect the impact of events and issues in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander history during service delivery

1.2  Demonstrate knowledge of and respect for the diversity of culture, skin and language groups, family structures, art and religion in Indigenous cultures as part of service delivery

2.1       Identify the potential impact of cultural factors on service delivery to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients

2.3       Negotiate appropriate strategies to effectively accommodate cultural differences in the workplace

Assessment Tasks

 

This unit is part of an integrated program.
You must demonstrate Performance and Knowledge Evidence of the unit in order to be deemed competent.
Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

The skills and knowledge to be assessed within this unit are as follows:

1. Workbook

2. Group presentation

3. Field trip to Immigration Museum

Competency based training requires you to be in attendance in order for assessment to be undertaken.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.

All Assessment tasks should be performed or submitted by their due dates.

If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to attend on the due date of an assessment (e.g. test, examination, oral, etc.) OR you do attend, but your performance has been affected, you may submit an APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION within two (2) working days of the due date. If Special Consideration is granted, you will be given the opportunity to complete/repeat the assessment task at a later date. There is no recommended resource for this unit.

Each assessment will be marked as either Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory.

In order to be assessed as Competent for this unit you must achieve a Satisfactory result for each assessment task.

The student is expected to attend classes, Lab sessions and Clinical Placement where applicable.

Resubmission or Reassessment of an Assessment Task:

There are no resubmissions of assessments which are Not Satisfactory. However individual consideration may be given in consultation with the Teacher and the Program Coordinator.

Reassessment of students who have attempted to undertake a practical assessment in the Clinical Lab (resulted as Not Satisfactory), and have attended all Lab sessions will be given one (1) further opportunity to demonstrate a Satisfactory result.
