Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance

Teaching Schedule

Lesson 1: Introduction to First Aid
• Define and discuss the legal parameters of first aid, including duty of care, negligence, consent & documentation
• Define & discuss infection control strategies
• Identify & discuss first aid equipment
• Describe how to respond including primary and secondary surveys, & responding to emergencies at RMIT
• Describe ARG (2010) for BLS, including management of airway obstruction, and cardiac arrest


Lesson 2: Medical Emergencies
• Discuss/Describe the signs/symptoms & management of neurological, respiratory, cardiac and diabetic emergencies


Lesson 3: Trauma Emergencies
• Discuss/Describe the signs/symptoms & management of
- Bleeding & Shock
- Head Injuries (concussion)
- Fractures
- Burns
- Poisons (ingested, bites & stings)


Lab 1: Responding to Emergencies
• Review the theory of responding to emergencies
• Students to demonstrate primary and secondary survey for an unconscious patient
• Students to demonstrate management of bites, bleeding & fractures


Lab 2: Responding to Emergencies
• Review theory of basic life support
• Students to demonstrate basic life support on an adult, child & infant
• Students to discuss/demonstrate the management of airway emergencies

Overview of Assessment

Underpinning knowedge for this competency will be assessed via the following methods:

  • Practical Assessment
  • Written examination / Assessment


Assessment Tasks

• Attendance of classes 80% required
Written Assessment Time allocated: 1 hour
The student must complete this compulsory task and demonstrate competent underpinning knowledge in 80 % of the following task. The minimum pass mark is 24/30

Assessment 2: Practical assessment

This practical assessment should take place in an environment that simulates an emergency medical situation. The assessment of CPR procedures must be conducted with a resuscitation manikin in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines. Where possible, the assessment should be conducted more than once, so additional copies of this checklist may need to be made.

Assessment checklist
Assessors are expected to question students to clarify and confirm their knowledge as part of this assessment process. This may include questions about principles of first aid, duty of care, priorities of implementation, chain of survival & specific first aid procedures.
