Course Description
In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required for the safe application of a range of tools and materials to manufacture simple support elements for visual displays.

These units will be delivered in class at the city campus. Delivery will include the following.
Discussion, practical demonstrations regarding the safe use, handling and storage of materials, tools & equipment.
Discussion, practical demonstration regarding the appropriate choice of materials, tools & equipment.
Discussion, analysis of workplace safety issues
Design, fabrication or construction of props, Visual Merchandising signage to meetclient needs.

You will use a range of tools, equipment & materials. techniques, equipment and materials to produce industry standard props, signage and display material for various promotional, branding or client needs.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills.
Assessment tasks in this course are:
3 x major projects = 100%
Please note: All Assessment tasks need to be completed before competency is achieved. A number of tasks will be formative to show your progress and development of skills and knowledge throughout the semester. The final task will be summative to provide a level of performance in addition to your competency.

Work due week 11 - Street Art - You are to demonstrate correct-use of appropriate materials, cutting tools, paints & equipment to manufacture basic VM display props and signage.(Graded assessment 30%)
Work due week 14 - Eames Cards You are to demonstrate correct-use of appropriate materials, cutting tools, paints, adhesives & equipment to manufacture basic VM display props and signage. Demonstrate appropriate use of colour copy images & paint finshes in accordance with the specified theme. (Graded assessment 35%)
Competency based assessment
You will receive feedback with verbal and/or written evaluation of your progress within class time.
The submitted projects will be assessed with written feedback as well as a quality indicator that relates to separate components of the project and the overall outcome.

CHD : Competent with High Distinction : 80 – 100
CDI : Competent with Distinction 70 – 79
CC - Competent with Credit : 60 – 69

Late Submission & Extensions
Any student seeking an extension, should aim at doing so a minimum of 2 days before the deadline. Work submitted late and without an extension at any point will incur late penalties in accordance with university policy.

On Time Submission and Impact of Late Submission
On time submission is an important factor in your assessment. Employability skills are embedded in all courses and these include Planning & Organising and Self-management. For this reason, late work impacts on your overall grade for each assessment task.


The following adjustments for late submission will be made. Grades will be reduced by 10%, for each day (or part thereof), for the first two days. If submissions are three days or more late, the work will only be assessed as a pass or fail – and not graded. Submissions seven days or more late, should still be handed in, however they will not be assessed and will be kept as a record only.
