Course Description

This course describes the skills and knowledge required for workers to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others as it applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, either under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility.

Details of Learning Activities

The learning activities for this course will include the following:

  • simulations
  • media clips
  • case studies
  • group discussion


Teaching Schedule

Students will be allocated two days for this course.

One day will be spent in class where students will participate in an active learning class where they will

  • go through evacuation and safety drills,
  • discuss ways of keeping themselves and clients safe in an emergency situation.
  • participate in an evacuation drill.
  • the WHS Act

The second day of class will be spent completing an online test which will draw on the practical class held earlier, to show their competency in this unit.

Assessment Tasks

There are two assessment tasks for this course:

  1. Participation in the practical class which students must attend so that competency can be demonstrated to the teacher.
  2. An online quiz which is based on the practical class.
