Course Description
This course describes the knowledge, skills and attitudes required by workers in community services and health settings to work in a consumer directed and oriented way with consumers who are living with mental health issues.

Learning Outcomes
Students will gain their Mental Health First Aid Certificate (Youth) as part of this course which will involve two full days of classes. The third day will be spent on a case study pertaining to a specific mental health issue.
Details of Learning Activities
Students will undertake various activities based on the theory provided around mental health issues. This will include
- class discussions
- case studies
- media clips.
Teaching Schedule
The teaching schedule for this course is as follows:
Class 1 & 2 - 30 September and 5 October. Attendance for both classes is compulsory
Students will be undertaking theory and practical classes which at the end of it will entitle them to the Mental Health First Aid (Youth) Certificate.
Topics covered over the two weeks will include:
- Applying knowledge of the mental health sector
- Establishing appropriate working relationships with consumers who are living with mental health issues
- Clarifying the needs and issues of consumers
- Providing non-clinical services to meet consumer aspirations and needs
- Applying self-care strategies

Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this course is based on completing the following:
- a case study completed in class
- theoretical and practical test completed in class.
Assessment Tasks
Students will be required to complete two assessment tasks for this course.
1. Students must attend all scheduled classes and complete the set work of questions during the scheduled class time to obtain the Mental Health First Aid (Youth) Certificate
2. Submit a case study pertaining to a mental health issue. Students will be required to write about their action plan for the client, based on the classes attended. Due date 12 October 2015.
