Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. It covers developing a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learned for application to future projects.
This unit applies to individuals who play a significant role in ensuring a project meets timelines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project.
The unit does not apply to specialist project managers. For specialist project managers, the other units of competency in the project management field (BSBPMG) will be applicable.

Details of Learning Activities
A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative classroom based activities.
The self-paced activities will be delivered through various technology platforms and may include contribution to wikis and discussion threads, quizzes and interactive sessions.
The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussions, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practise your skills in simulated business activities, exercises and tasks.
We expect you to participate and contribute in all scheduled learning activities.

Overview of Assessment
In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:
Performance Evidence
Evidence of the ability to:
- define the parameters of the project including:
- project scope
- project stakeholders, including own responsibilities
- relationship of project to organisational objectives and other projects
- reporting requirements
- resource requirements
- use project management tools to develop and implement a project plan including:
- deliverables
- work breakdown
- budget and allocation of resources
- timelines
- risk management
- recordkeeping and reporting
- consult and communicate with relevant stakeholders to generate input and engagement in planning, implementing and reviewing the project
- provide support to team members to enable them to achieve deliverables and to transition them as appropriate at completion of the project
- finalise the project including documentation, sign-offs and reporting
- review and document the project outcomes.
Knowledge Evidence
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, you must:
- give examples of project management tools and how they contribute to a project
- outline types of documents and other sources of information commonly used in defining the parameters of a project
- explain processes for identifying and managing risk in a project
- outline the organisation’s mission, goals, objectives and operations and how the project relates to them
- explain the organisation’s procedures and processes that are relevant to managing a project including:
- lines of authority and approvals
- quality assurance
- human resources
- budgets and finance
- recordkeeping
- reporting
- outline the legislative and regulatory context of the organisation in relation to project work, including work health and safety (WHS) requirements.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the management and leadership – project management field of work and include access to:
- relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes
- relevant workplace documentation and resources
- case studies and, where possible, real situations
- interaction with others.
Feedback
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions. You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.
You should take note of all feedback received and use this information to improve your learning outcomes and final performance in the course.
Assessment Tasks
This unit involves undertaking and implementing a major project and is divided into 2 parts:
- (a) Project brief, (b) Project plan and (c) Portfolio of evidence - presentation
- (a) Project implementation and (b) Project team review - presentation
Overview
To be successful in Undertake Project Work, you must complete both parts. Once they have been completed and you have been deemed competent, a grade will be applied. An indicative grade may be given for each part to enable you to gauge your progress. Refer to the grading criteria at the end of assessment document for further information.
ASSESSMENT INSTRUCTIONS
In teams of 4, you are required to plan, manage and implement a project within the time allocated and resources available to you.
You need to think about all the components required for your project to be successful. What resources are needed? Who will be involved? Are there any licenses or permits required? What is the availability of team members? Go into as much detail as possible to determine all your requirements. Then, you need to complete the two parts as outlined below. Details are available in a separate document available on Blackboard. NOTE: Students might be asked to individually demonstrate their competency to the teacher, if required.
1(a) Project Brief – group work due in-class
You are required to present a project brief to the class outlining your proposal. The format of your presentation can be negotiated between your team and your teacher, however, you must cover all the criteria listed in the full assessment document.
1(b) Project Plan – group due in-class
You now need to write up a detailed project plan outlining the process you and your team expect to follow as you go about implementing your project. This will include a proposed budget and risk management plan. Your teacher will give you guidance on writing and formatting your plan, however, you will be expected to cover all the criteria listed in the full assessment document.
1(c)Portfolio of Evidence – group due in-class
This is where you and your team go about putting things into place to ensure your project can be implemented at a later stage. You will need to create a team roster, allocate specific duties and timelines, liaise with suppliers, venues and all stakeholders to put your plan into place. It will involve a lot of organising and you will be required to conduct team meetings to review all processes and progress against your initial plan. During your team meetings, record the minutes and discuss ways of making continuous improvements in everything you do. All e-mails, receipts, minutes and any documentation you create along the way needs to be filed away into a portfolio of evidence.
You will be expected to cover all the criteria listed in the full assessment document.
2(a) Implementation of the Project – group in-class
Here you will be implementing your project, that is, the final product and culmination of all the careful planning and organising you and your team have been undertaking. During this time you will be required to manage and treat any associated risks, monitor customer service, and ensure all projected outcomes are met.
NOTE: For the implementation of your project, you will need to create a running sheet (schedule) with all the timings and allocated duties.
You will be expected to cover all the criteria listed in the full assessment document.
2(b) Team Review of the Project – group due in-class
In your teams you are required to conduct a comprehensive review of your project and document the outcomes. Ask yourselves, what worked? What did not work? What could be improved for next time? You also need to conduct a peer review which will be submitted confidentially. Your teacher will provide you with guidelines on what aspects to cover and these peer reviews will not be discussed within your group unless there is concern over a specific team member’s contributions.

Submission Requirements
You should:
• Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date. • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy) • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. Late Submission Procedures You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates. If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days. Resubmissions If you are found to be unsuccessful in a Course Assessment Task you will be allowed one resubmission only. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. The highest grade you will receive if your resubmission is successful is “CAG”. If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
