Course Description

This course covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to design and develop assessment tools, including tools used in formative, summative and recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment.

Details of Learning Activities

You will participate in online tutorials including activities such as: unpacking units of competency, designing and developing assessment tools and trialling and reviewing those tools. Other activities will include: online research and posting in the online discussion board.   At RMIT Work Integrated Learning (WIL) refers to opportunities for you to experience either real or simulated workplaces within your program. WIL activities in this program include:   • Simulations of training and assessment work environments • Work based projects completed within your own workplace.   Many students who undertake this program are already employed in a training and assessment role. Some assessment activities are conducted in a workplace and you are encouraged to use your own workplaces for this.


Teaching Schedule

This unit is delivered over three (3) sessions covering the following content:

Design and develop assessment tools Checklist – a Guide to developing a complete assessment tool, Step 1 – unpacking a Unit of Competence, Step 2 – Writing your assessment plan and Step 3 – Developing an Assessment Matrix

 

Session 3:

Design and develop assessment tools Checklist – a Guide to developing a complete assessment tool, Step 4 – develop your student instructions, Step 5 – develop your Assessor instructions and Marking Guides based on your selected instruments, Step 6 – Create a Final Result Summary sheet and Step 7 – Trial and Review your Assessment tool

Assessment Tasks

For TAEASS502, you are to complete three (3) assessment tasks to a satisfactory standard to achieve a competent result for the unit.   You will design, develop, trial and review three (3) assessment tools, each tool must cover a different unit of competency in its entirety, plus answer ten (10) short answer questions.   You will be provided with a range of templates on Canvas which you can use to develop and organise your evidence.  These include templates for the following:

  • Assessment Plan
  • Competency matrix for mapping your assessment of a unit of competency 
  • Various assessment instrument types such as Observation checklist, folio of evidence and knowledge questions 
  • Assessor Instructions and Marking guides 
  • Assessment record and feedback
  Please familiarise yourself with the assessment tasks in the Assignments area of Canvas. The following summarises the requirements for each assessment task.     Task 1 Design and develop one (1) assessment tool:

This is the first of three assessment tasks for this unit. You are required to plan, design and develop plus trial and review one complete assessment tool for an entire unit of competency.

You will complete this task in three parts:

  1. Planning a competency-based assessment that covers one entire unit of competency and its assessment requirements
  2. Designing and developing the assessment tool and all appropriate documentation that supports your assessment plan
  3. Trialling, reviewing and revising your assessment tool
    Task 2 Design and develop two (2) assessment tools:   This is the second of three assessment tasks for this unit. You are required to plan, design and develop plus trial and review TWO complete assessment tools.  Each tool must cover a different unit of competency in its entirety.   You will complete the following three parts for each tool design:
  1. Planning a competency-based assessment that covers one entire unit of competency and its assessment requirements
  2. Designing and developing the assessment tool and all appropriate documentation that supports your assessment plan
  3. Trialling, reviewing and revising your assessment tool
     Task 3 Short answer Knowledge questions:   You are required to respond in your own words (200-250 words for each question) to 10 questions about assessment. The topics cover key concepts in assessment in VET: Competency-based assessment, principles of assessment, dimensions of competency, Recognition of Prior Learning, inclusive assessment practice, rules of evidence, Workplace Health and Safety, training packages and their uses, assessment instruments and tools and assessment validation.         Submission deadline:   Tasks 1 and 3 - submission by midnight Friday July 10 2020 Task 2 - submission by midnight Friday August 28 2020   It is a requirement of the Diploma of Training Design and Development program (TAE50216), that all assessment tasks are to be submitted electronically through the Canvas site.
