Course Description

This course covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake research into educational theory and apply this research to improve current training and assessment practice.

1. Prepare a research brief relating to training and assessment practice

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Identify the purpose of research to be conducted, according to the current and future needs of the organisation around training and assessment practice

1.2 Identify and report on rationale for research and proposed research procedures and the methodology to be used

1.3 Define activities to be undertaken in conducting the research, timeframe, resource required, and expected outcomes in line with organisational practice

1.4 Develop process and criteria to evaluate achievement of the outcomes

1.5 Prepare budget and timelines for the research, in line with organisational requirements and constraints

1.6 Present research proposal to relevant personnel for approval, in line with organisational procedures


2. Conduct research in training and assessment practice

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Manage and conduct research activities using effective techniques for project management, implementation and data collection

2.2 Collect data, and record appropriate project activities, in line with the research proposal

2.3 Analyse data obtained from the research in relation to its application, improving current and future training, and assessment practice


3. Investigate and apply educational theory to the research

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Identify appropriate sources of information to identify relevant educational theory

3.2 Apply appropriate educational theories to the outcomes of the training and assessment research

3.3 Make recommendations for training and assessment development, and improvement, in line with the identified current and future needs of the organisation


4. Report on the application of educational theory to training and assessment practice

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Prepare relevant documentation on research findings using academic referencing and citation protocols, for presentation to key personnel

4.2 Make recommendations for action to improve current, and future, training and assessment practice, based on the research findings, and present to relevant personnel for approval

4.3 Establish criteria to monitor and evaluate new practices, based on the research recommendations, and recommend monitoring and evaluation processes


5. Review entire process

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Design a process to review the research procedures, methodologies, data collection, analysis and reporting

5.2 Conduct the review in consultation with key personnel

5.3 Make recommendations for further research based on the review

 This course is online. Activities may include:

• blog/wiki discussion and participation
• participation in online discussion boards/threads and Collaborate sessions or other webinar-type activities
• keeping an online reflective journal
• analysis/critique of relevant reading material
• individual or group projects conducted through electronic media
• peer teaching and workshop presentations
• online research

Teaching Schedule

For students who commenced diploma study in July 2017

This course is taught over 3 sessions in semester 2. 

Note: While your teacher will cover all the material in this schedule, the order is subject to change depending on class needs.

Session 1: Prepare research brief by identifying the purpose of the research, the methodology to be be used, and determining project parameters such as timeframes, resources required, budget, etc

Session 2: Conduct the research by implementing the research brief plan and by collecting and analysing data

Session 3: Investigate and apply educational theory to the research. Report on the application of the theory to the research, make recommendations for improving training and/or assessment practice and review the research process

During the program you will complete assessment tasks which are listed, in detail, at the beginning of the course. These tasks may include :

  • Workplace based projects
  • Online assessment (eg discussion forum, blog, wiki, quiz)
  • Professional conversation
  • Third-party reports

Assessment Tasks

For students who commenced July 2017:

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete all of the following tasks to a satisfactory standard.
You will receive written feedback on all assessment tasks.

Task 1: Prepare a research brief 

 Write and submit a research brief on a topic of your choice relating to your training and assessment practice. 

Task 2:Conduct and report on a research project in training and assessment practice. 

From your brief in Task One, complete a full research report which incorporates the relevant educational theory. Your report must include a review of the research process you used.


Further details of the above assessment tasks will be provided in session 1 of semester 1 via myRMIT>myStudies.

Submission deadline:

Task 1: needs to be submitted by midnight Friday 16 March, 2018

Task 2: needs to be submitted by midnight Friday 13 April, 2018

It is a requirement of the Dip TD&D (TAE50216) program that all assessment work be submitted electronically in Canvas. You are asked to submit any workplace projects as a single Word or PDF file which must include a signed RMIT Cover Sheet; multiple project files will not be accepted.
