Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead assessment processes as a part of a continuous improvement strategy among a group of assessors within a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
It applies to experienced assessors who provide leadership, or guidance to others, who conduct assessments for an RTO.

This course is taught over 3 sessions in semester 2 as follows:

Session 1
Develop and extend assessment expertise
Self-reflect on current assessment practice
Define/determine what advanced assessment practice means
Source current research on assessment
Discuss how to incorporate research and new methods into existing assessment practice in order to extend it
Session 2
Practise assessment & evaluate and improve it
Revise principles of assessment, rules of evidence and assessment tools
Consider categories of different assessment methods
Discuss how different methods might be used with different units of competency in different industries and for different candidates' circumstances
Ensure quality assessment tools are used
Discuss how assessment practice can be evaluated
Explore ways, formal and informal, to monitor assessment practices of a group of assessors
Participate in and reflect upon the assessment moderation process
Session 3
Lead and influence other assessors
Demonstrate how to model high standards of ethical and compliance assessment practices
Determine professional development (PD) needs of fellow assessors
Implement approaches to build the skills and experience of this group

Overview of Assessment
During the program you will complete assessment tasks which are listed, in detail, at the beginning of the course. These tasks may include :
- Workplace based projects
- Online assessment (eg discussion forum, blog, wiki, quiz)
- Professional conversation
- Third-party reports

Assessment Tasks
To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete all of the following tasks to a satisfactory standard.
You will receive written feedback on all assessment tasks.
Task 1: Assess 20 candidates against at least 50 units of competency
Undertake the assessment of at least 20 individual candidates against a total of at least 50 units of competency from training packages or accredited courses. You must document accurately the outcomes of all of the assessments undertaken. You must also critically review the assessment processes and approaches taken in these assessments and propose changes to improve both processes and outcomes.
Task 2: Lead assessment in a team of at least 3 individuals
Lead assessment among a group or team of assessors, consisting of at least three (3) individuals and demonstrate how that leadership has led to improved processes and outcomes
Task 3: Online discussion forum
Participate in online discussion boards. Participation in such discussion boards will be evaluated using a number of criteria including: frequency of reading messages and posting responses; keeping to the topic with pertinent quality posts; engaging in critical dialogue through responding to other student’s posts and comments, etc.
Task 4: Professional conversation
Engage in a professional conversation with your facilitator. This conversation will address the knowledge evidence required of you as an advanced assessor.

It is a requirement of the Dip Training Design and Development (TAE50216) program that all assessment work be submitted electronically through the "2017FEBTDDVET" program shell in Blackboard. You are asked to submit any workplace projects as a single Word or PDF file which must include a signed RMIT Cover Sheet; multiple project files will not be accepted.
