Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

Students must have successfully completed all first year courses and  demonstrate that they can consistently work safely in the laboratory before they can be sent on work-placement.
Students must also be immunised against Hepatitis B.

Course Description

 

This unit of competency covers the ability to plan and complete tasks individually or in a team context. The tasks involve established routines and procedures using allocated resources with access to readily available guidelines and advice. Work plans may need to be modified with supervisor agreement to suit changing conditions and priorities.

Details of Learning Activities

In first semester students, will need to prepare for the placement by preparing application letters, resumes and by completing a Getting ready for WIL assignment.

During the semester, there will be several compulsory information sessions.

During your Placement -  your supervisor will complete the WIL Logbook and you will need to complete the WIL Assessment record book .


Teaching Schedule

Students may have placement as 1 or 2 days per week, as a block of 10 days during the mid year break or during semester 2 breaks. Some students will not be able to do their placement until November- this timing suits some employers better than during the year.

Assessment Tasks

The assessment is as follows:

  • Assessment 1: WIL report due 2/4/18
  • Assessment 2: WIL contract due ASAP.  Aim to have the placement organised and assessment completed by 5/11/18 at the latest.
  • Assessment 3: Workplace logbook must be submitted within 2 weeks of completing the placement. Aim to have the placement organised and assessment completed by 5/11/18 at the latest. A minimum of 10 days work must be completed & verified before submission.
  • Assessment 4: Workplace report must be submitted within 2 weeks of completing the placement. Aim to have the placement organised and assessment completed by 5/11/18 at the latest.

 

You must pass all elements of the assessment to pass the course.

Feedback from the host employer will also be taken into consideration

This competency is not graded- students will be assessed as competent (CA) or Not Yet Competent (NYC)

Before commencing placement, students must have completed all first year subjects or have obtained approval from the Program Manager.

Before commencing placement, students must demonstrate that they can meet workplace expectations.
They should have the following personal and professional competencies:

-Communication skills, (oral and written);

-Demonstrate consistent OHS skills in all laboratory classes;

-Teamwork skills;

-Self-sufficiency, ability to work independently;

-Industry knowledge;

-Problem solving skills;

-Personal organisation;

-Customer relationship/confidentiality;

-Professional ethics.

Before commencing placement, students should be able to comply with the RMIT “Student Checklist – WIL placement” requirements – see Canvas

Students who are asked to leave their placement by the host employer due to unacceptable behaviour will have to find their own new placement.
