Course Description
This course describes the nursing skills and knowledge required to work in a primary health care environment including community-based, educational, occupational and informal settings, and in general practice.
Primary health care involves a person-centred and holistic approach to health care. It is made accessible to people by being located as close as possible to where they live, and supporting their full participation in a spirit of self-reliance and self-determination.
This course applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia regulatory authority legislative requirements.
This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.
This course includes clinical placement.

Learning Outcomes
The critical learning for this course takes place in clinical placement within the health sector and within simulations in RMIT laboratories.
You will be instructed in skills through demonstration, modelling and role-play. Skills development is supported by lectures on theory and underpinning knowledge, classroom discussions, group work, research and reflective practice.

Learning activities will include face to face delivery as well as practical labs with a clinical placement component. You will be expected to utilise the worldwide web, focussing on Australian primary health care providers and support, to enhance your learning and complete assessments.

Overview of Assessment
This assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including written, oral, practical tasks and activities.
You will be asked to personally demonstrate to your teacher/assessor the practical skills gained during this course to the relevant industry standards. Assessment activities will occur throughout this course and feedback will be provided at regular intervals

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1: Case Study
Guidelines will be provided for this case study.
You will analyse the health information and clinical presentation of 1 person in the simulated workplace to reach decisions about possible nursing interventions related to their primary health care needs.
Assessment Task 2 : Resources Review
You need to search for resources that will enable you to recognise the impact of a health problem on a person in the primary health care environment including health promotion and education in consultation with your teacher. This is a groupwork assessment task and your group findings will be presented to the remainder of the class. A groupwork agreement must be signed before commencement of the task. Use the library services to access 4 evidence based articles (one each) that are relevant to your review and include them in the presentation. Write a brief summary of these findings and submit on canvas on the day of your presentation.
Assessment Task 3: First Aid management and Practical Assessment
In the laboratory, you will need to demonstrate practical first aid skills that will be observed and assessed by your peers.
Assessment Task 4: Clinical Placement including simulation labs.
You be required to complete 1 week of primary health care placement.
During placement, you will review and update a care plan for a patient to address their specific primary health care needs in consultation with a registered Nurse.

Attendance
You are to attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensure the maximum opportunity and gain competency in the course.
Special consideration

You must be competent in all elements to successfully complete the course
You are permitted to have a maximum of 2 re submissions for this course; however each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once.

All re submissions must be completed and submitted no more than 7 days after our work has been assessed.
Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.
