Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to gather intelligence about an international target market to inform business development.
It applies to individuals who possess a sound theoretical knowledge base in international business management and who have a range of managerial and supervisory skills to ensure business activities are conducted effectively.
In this role, individuals would have responsibility for forecasting international and business needs, collecting market intelligence, reviewing current business performance and capability, evaluating specific markets and documenting how a business can meet current and emerging needs.

Learning Outcomes
This course is structured to provide students with the optimum learning experience in order to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to gather intelligence about an international target market to inform business development.
Details of Learning Activities
A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative class room based activities.
The self-based activities will be delivered through various technology platforms and will include quizzes, scenario case studies and interactive sessions. The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice skills in a simulated workplace environment.

Assessment Methods
Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of the requirements in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks, for example:
- direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
- review of final printed documents
- demonstration of techniques
- observation of presentations
- oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of software applications
You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.
Performance Evidence
You must provide evidence of the ability to:
- analyse information from a range of sources and apply forecasting techniques to identify international market and business needs, including:
- collection of market intelligence
- review of current business performance and capability
- review of effectiveness of international marketing or positioning

Assessment Tasks
Assessment 1 Assessment Task 1 – Country assessment report
Date handed out: Week 1
Date and time due: Week 9 (10 Sep.2017: Sunday 11.59pm.)
Group or Individual: 2 to 3 students per group)
Purpose: This assignment will require you to research international markets for business expansion overseas. It will allow you to identify and access sources of international market & business trends and market intelligence. Analyse market for relevance and applicability to the organisation’s international business activity to conduct business overseas.
Requirements: You are required to prepare a short report which analyses a few countries and recommend a country for business expansion overseas. Demonstrate your ability to identify and access sources of market intelligence, evaluate commercial services providing market intelligence, collate and analyse market for relevance and applicability to the organisation’s international business activity and undertake an evaluation of marketing performance. The word limit for the report should be minimum 750 words and maximum 1,500 words and should be fully referenced.
Assessment Task 2 – International market and business needs report
Date handed out: Week 2
Date and time due: Week 13 (8 Oct 2017: Sunday 11.59pm.)
Group or Individual: 2 to 3 students per group
Purpose: This assignment will allow you to demonstrate your forecasting skills in international and business needs. You will need to gather and document market intelligence, identify and assess current capabilities and resources to identify areas for improvement, evaluate specific markets, forecast and justify emerging international market needs in terms of available information.
Requirements: You are required to put together a report on international market and business needs on behalf of your client. It should evaluate the international environment, identify market factors and risks and to assess the viability of international marketing opportunities. You may also be required to prepare for entering an international or export market for the first time.
Assessment 3 Assessment Task 3 – Oral presentation
Date handed out: Week 10
Date and time due: Weeks 15/16 (Class time)
Group or Individual: Individually assessed
Purpose: This assignment will give you the experience of presenting your international market and business needs report to your client to ensure business activities are conducted effectively and how a business can meet current and emerging needs.
Requirements: 1. Students will be required to make a presentation on their international market and business needs report for between 13 to 15 minutes 2. Students will be assessed individually and are required to provide a hard copy of the notes to the class teacher before the presentation. 3. Students MUST present themselves 15 minutes before their allocated presentation times. 4. Allow 2-5 minutes for question time. 5. Total time allocated for each group’s presentation is 15 minutes (including question time) 6. Dress Code: Smart office/business attire or uniform.

Submission Requirements
You should:
• Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.
• Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (Hard copy and soft copy)
• When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of each assessment task is available on blackboard.

Late Submission Procedures
You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.
If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Re-submissions (VE Programs):
If you are found to be unsuccessful in a particular Course Assessment Task (or you do not submit/attend) you will be allowed one re-submission. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the re-submission.
If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.

Group Assessment
A number of your assessments will rely upon group work. This is a critical part of your program as in the workplace you will be regularly required to work in a team environment. Teamwork is also one of the key employability skills for this qualification.
