Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. It covers developing a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learned for application to future projects.


This unit applies to individuals who play a significant role in ensuring a project meets timelines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project.


The unit does not apply to specialist project managers. For specialist project managers, the other units of competency in the project management field (BSBPMG) will be applicable.

Details of Learning Activities

Through class activities, simulated learning through the simulated business community website and the business partner, you will experience self-directed and shared learning with others and apply employability skills focusing on activities to develop a project plan, administer and monitor the project, finalise the project and review the project to identify lessons learned for application in future projects. Learning activities will include working with the business partner Formfile, to deliver a project plan for the "Digital Office". Internet research and group activities underpin the textbook theory which will include reading and class discussions, designing project administration tools and reviewing the project by reporting project outcomes to the industry partner.

Overview of Assessment

In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:

 define the parameters of the project including:
 project scope
 project stakeholders, including own responsibilities
 relationship of project to organisational objectives and other projects
 reporting requirements
 resource requirements
 use project management tools to develop and implement a project plan including:
 deliverables
 work breakdown
 budget and allocation of resources
 timelines
 risk management
 recordkeeping and reporting
 consult and communicate with relevant stakeholders to generate input and engagement in planning, implementing and reviewing the project
 provide support to team members to enable them to achieve deliverables and to transition them as appropriate at completion of the project
 finalise the project including documentation, sign-offs and reporting
 review and document the project outcomes.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
 give examples of project management tools and how they contribute to a project
 outline types of documents and other sources of information commonly used in defining the parameters of a project
 explain processes for identifying and managing risk in a project
 outline the organisation's mission, goals, objectives and operations and how the project relates to them
 explain the organisation's procedures and processes that are relevant to managing a project including:

 outline the legislative and regulatory context of the organisation in relation to project work, including work health and safety (WHS) requirements.


Assessment Conditions


Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the management and leadership – project management field of work and include access to:
 relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes
 relevant workplace documentation and resources
 case studies and, where possible, real situations
 interaction with others.


Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions.  You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed.  Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

PROJECT BRIEF

The simulated business partner, Formfile Records Management Group will give you a brief for the digital office project. You will learn about what a digital office is and apply your knowledge and skills to managing a project about the digital office. Remember you are undertaking project work with a deliverable, so you need to understand what it is you are delivering. You will be defining the project scope and plan. You will also define the project deliverables.

Assessment TASK 1

There is one task for this assessment. You will receive feedback and a grade

You must achieve CA grade for all parts of Task 1 to be deemed competent in this course.  Feedback on your work is given in class, weekly. When you are competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.

Overview

This assessment requires you to reflect on the work you did for Task 1 and the resources you used. This is an individual submission.

PROJECT BRIEF

Compile examples of your monitoring documents and evaluation of Task 1 project scope and plan.

Include arrangements and evaluation of the efficacy of the project plan and submit to the Blackboard by the end of Week 14. The appendices should form part of the report as one document, with evidence of project monitoring tools used for example; Gantt chart, flow charts, control charts, the P-D-C-A cycle, check sheets, etc.

Assessment TASK 2

There is one task for this assessment. You will receive feedback and a grade.

You must achieve CA grade for all parts of Tasks 1 and 2 to be deemed competent in this course.  Feedback on your work is given in class, weekly. When you are competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.

Submission Instructions

You will submit work produced in class and consult the stakeholder who will visit the class. Do not contact the stakeholder, Formfile. There will be plenty of opportunity for you to engage with the stakeholder during face-to-face time or with your teacher.Refer to dates in teaching schedule and upload all work, the project and the activities to Blackboard in the week indicated that it is due.

  • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date. Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
    • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of each assessment task is available on blackboard.

Late Submission Procedures
You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

Resubmissions
If you are found to be unsuccessful in a Course Assessment Task you will be allowed one resubmission only. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. The highest grade you will receive if your resubmission is successful is “CAG”.
If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.

Marking Guide
You must demonstrate that you have all the required performance and knowledge evidence in this unit of competency. You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you about your progress and how well you are performing.  After achieving competency we then grade your performance in the unit and you will achieve one of the following grades:
