Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources and supply solutions to contractual issues in a legal environment.
It applies to individuals who provide support in a range of legal service settings with a degree of responsibility to plan and complete investigations.

Details of Learning Activities
The diploma is mainly taught face-to-face in a classroom setting with some structured online components. The online components will require you to actively participate in a teacher led e-learning environment through the use of discussion boards, online quizzes and action learning activities.
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including group discussions, tutorials, workplace simulated projects, online quizzes, role plays and case studies.
RMIT’s simulated work environment (Practice Firm), called The Swanston Banking Group Ltd, is a key feature of the diploma so we can deliver coursework and current industry practices. Within the firm you will be required to undertake a range of work-related activities. You will have the opportunity to develop skills in collaboration, structuring meetings, working with client files and engaging with simulated clients in the form of role plays. You will assume the role of the financial services industry professional working in the Practice Firm as an employee with a position description. You will be expected to follow the bank’s policies and procedures.
In your roles you will be provided with a customer brief and you will be required to assess the client’s future financial status, or research and recommend services and products to meet their needs.
We expect you to participate and contribute in all scheduled learning activities.

Overview of Assessment
In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:
Performance evidence
Evidence of the ability to:
- apply principles of contract law
- demonstrate the steps for discharge of a contract.
Knowledge Evidence
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
- define commonly used legal terminology, institutions and main features of Australian legal system
- outline methods used to identify appropriate information sources of Australian law
- explain nature, aims and rationale of contracts, including agreements, intention to create legal relations, consideration, and capacity to contract
- explain remedies for breach of contract
- describe illegal and void contracts
- explain privacy of contract and assignment of contract.
Assessment conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the legal services administration field of work and include access to:
- office equipment and resources
- legislation and regulations relevant to contract law
- sources of information about contract law.

Assessment Tasks
This course is comprised of one single competency.
LAW5730C – Apply the Principle of Contract Law
You will demonstrate competency by undertaking two assessments. The assessments for this course have been designed to allow you to apply your learning to particular workplace scenarios and demonstrate your competence in a variety of ways.
Assessment Task 1 – Knowledge Assessment Task Due Date: Week 10 –
This assessment has been designed for you to progressively build your knowledge and skills in Contract Law to determine the principles of contract law in Financial Services
You are required to demonstrate your knowledge by completing a series of theory and problem solving questions that involve research and the application of concepts relevant in financial services.
This assessment task is one of two required to demonstrate competency for this unit.
Assessment Task 2 - Knowledge Assessment Task Due Date: Week 15 –
For this Assessment Task you are required to demonstrate your knowledge by completing an Open book, In-Class supervised assessment comprised of a series of theoretical and practical questions
For this Assessment Task you are required to demonstrate your knowledge by completing an open book in class supervised assessment. The assessment comprises of problem solving style questions. The purpose of this task is to assess your understanding of the concepts and issues included in the course. The duration of the assessment is two hours.

You should:
Late Submission Procedures You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates. If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.
