Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to prepare signage for use in the display of merchandise and promotional activity. You will develop the ability to determine signage requirements, design suitable signage options and arrange production.

2.1. Access creative sources of information and identify signage trends to draw inspiration to inform design.

2.4. Identify resources required to produce signage and confirm feasibility and alignment with budget.

2.5. Determine internal and external resourcing and production requirements.

2.6. Identify opportunities to create cost-efficiencies and maximise use of resources.

2.7. Identify and action measures for achieving resourcing efficiencies in signage production.

2.8. Develop a production brief to provide external parties with clear and detailed signage brief.

Welcome to Studio 1!

This course is all about making great props and signage, and doing it safely! Over the next 16 weeks we will meet for 3 hours each week in the VM workshop to explore manufacturing techniques and safe working practices. Canvas will be used in this course as the place where you can access course assessments and relevant and inspirational information. 

By the end of this course you should be able to create a range of signage and props, and have a solid grounding in working safely in the workplace.

Welcome & introduction to course content.

OH&S induction. Introduction to tools and equipment. 

Demonstrate creating stencils and cutting simple styrene shapes  EG Letters, Numbers

Demonstrate cutting screenboard . EG Cut card board strips for posters.

Discuss and Intro first assessment "Sign and Icon". Show samples

Student Homework : Find an inexpensive product  (eg drink or confectionary or other) with interesting graphics that can be converted to 3D signage. Bring one full colour photocopy (or original packaging/wrapper) to class as well as three black and white photocopies scaled up to fill an A3 page. This will be the size of the final signage.

Other Information

Your safety and the safety of others is of the utmost importance.

Classes are conducted in a workshop environment with materials, tools and equipment that may be hazardous or may cause injury. Students must observe OHS (Occupational Health & Safety) and WHS (Workplace Health Safety) requirements at all times. Students are ensure that they wear clothing appropriate for this environment  - no loose fitting clothing or jewellery and long hair is to be tied back. Shoes MUST cover the entire foot - no sandals or thongs permitted.

No headphones, ear buds etc., are to be used in the studio workshop area. 

Where appropriate or directed by staff, students must use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in the workshop area.

Students shall only use tools and equipment for which they have received the appropriate training and for which they have been logged. 

Students not meeting these requirements will be not be allowed access to the workshop and display areas and will be basked to leave.
