Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to follow organisational policies and procedures for safe work practice. 

On completion of the unit you will have an understanding of the requirements for all employees under state and territory Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, to participate in the management of their own health and safety, that of their colleagues and anyone else in the workplace.

Details of Learning Activities

Welcome to Prop Making!

This course is all about making great props and signage, and doing it safely! Over the next 16 weeks we will meet for 3 hours each week in the VM workshop to explore manufacturing techniques and safe working practices. Canvas will be used in this course as the place where you can access course assessments and relevant and inspirational information.  

Prop Making is what is known as a "clustered course". That is, it is a course made up of two or more complimentary units. In this course those units are MKTG 8026C "Design and Install Merchandise Signage" (National training Code SIRRMER011) and OHTH 5976C "Contribute to Workplace Safety" National training Code SIRXWHS002). 

By the end of this course you should be able to create a range of signage and props, and have a solid grounding in working safely in the workplace.

Demonstrate creating stencils and cutting simple styrene shapes  EG Letters, Numbers

Demonstrate cutting screenboard . EG Cut card board strips for posters.

Discuss and Intro first assessment "Sign and Icon". Show samples

Student Homework : Find an inexpensive product  (eg drink or confectionary or other) with interesting graphics that can be converted to 3D signage. Bring one full colour photocopy (or original packaging/wrapper) to class as well as three black and white photocopies scaled up to fill an A3 page. This will be the size of the final signage.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills.
Assessment tasks include:

Assessment Tasks

  1. Sign and Icon - For this assignment you will create a 3D sign and a 3D icon (prop) for a food or beverage product. The sign will feature the name of the brand, and the icon is a prop or logo that reflects the product brand. The sign and the Icon will be used in displays that you create in Display 1. The size of the sign will be A3.
  2. Pop-Up book - For this assignment, you will work in pairs to create two A4 size, 3D Popup books. Each student can make their own book. One book will be made in portrait and the other book will be made in landscape format. This book could be considered a scale-model concept for a window display or a freestanding installation within a store or shopping Mall. These Pop Up books will be used for a display in Display 1, weeks 14, 15, 16 (dependent upon your class).
  3. Table Centre Piece - For this assessment, you will make a creative Table Centre Piece (TCP) based on the design and construction plans you have been working on in Illustration. The purpose is to take a creative concept and convert it to a completed 3D object. The completed Table Centre Piece you create will be used for a themed table setting in Display 1 later in Semester 1. The structure MUST be made from Cardboard.
  4. Job Safety Analysis (JSA) - Students are to complete JSA for a work task in Prop Making (Studio 1). Students will need to identify what is involved, the materials ,tools, equipment required. This requires students to conduct an "job audit" to to specify any potential hazards, identify actions to mitigate these potential hazards, specify who is responsible for this, and the timeframe.
  5. Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) online quiz - This is an online (OHS) quiz. Students must answer all questions correctly. You may attempt this as many times as required.

Occupational Health and Safety - All student activities within the Studio Workshop space will be subject to ongoing observation and assessment throughout all classes. Students must demonstrate sound workshop practice and behaviours in accordance with all OHS requirements. This also includes complying with the appropriate dress code. as covered in the workshop induction.

Other Information

Teaching and workshop staff will conduct an OHS & WHS Safety Induction for students. Staff will cover;

  1. Expectations for mandatory workshop dress code and behaviours. No loose clothing or jewellery and hair elastics to to tie back long hair.
  2. Use, care and storage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  3. Use of dust and fume extractors in the workshop and adjacent rooms
  4. Use care and storage of materials, tools and equipment. This is ongoing as required as students progress from using basic manual hand tools & equipment to the use of cordless power tools and AC powered tools/equipment.
  5. Storage and care of props made by students
  6. There will also be an OHS quiz and a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) task.
  7. OHS & WHS Safety assessment will be ongoing throughout the semester/s. Staff will constantly monitor student use of materials, tools and equipment, providing information, advice and feedback as necessary.
  8. Students may only use tools and equipment for which they have received the appropriate training and induction from studio staff. Students must also register online that they have received the appropriate training and induction for specific tools and equipment.
