Course Description

In this course you will gain the skills and knowledge required to follow organisational infection prevention and control procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks.

Details of Learning Activities

This unit is designed to be delivered in a Blended Learning mode.  Blended Learning involves learning through various modes, for example, online learning and learning in a classroom.

The Blended Learning approach for this unit includes:

  • Classroom teaching and tutorials - introducing you to key concepts within the course
  • Labs - provide practice and simulation
  • Clinical experience - provides you with practical experience in a nursing health care environment

Lesson 1: Introduction to infection control 

Welcome to comply infection prevention and   control policies and procedures. 

Overview of the assessment tasks and due dates 

 

Today's session will include in class activities/ discussion including researching, watching you tube websites to cover the following learning outcomes from lesson 1: 

  • Hand hygiene practices in accordance with organisations policies and procedures 
  • Hand care procedures and cover cuts and abrasions 
  • Place appropriate signs when and where appropriate 
  • Identify and respond to situations where additional precautions may be required to prevent transmission of infection 

 

Online module 1:  Prevent and control infection to be completed in own time.

Session 2 

Lesson 2 – self-directed learning including researching, watching you tube websites to cover the following learning outcomes: 

  • Organisation procedures for choice and use of personal protection equipment 
  • Procedures for respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette 
  • Procedures for environmental cleaning 
  • Procedures for handling, transporting and processing of linen in a manner that controls the spread of infection 
  • Procedures for disposal of contaminated waste 
  • Procedures for handling and cleaning client equipment that prevents skin and mucous membrane exposures, contamination of clothing, and transfer of pathogens 
  • Infection hazards associated with own role and work environment 
  • Own areas of responsibility in relation to infection prevention and control 
  • Assess risk by determining the likelihood and severity of harm from identified hazards. 
  • Document and report activities and tasks that put self, clients, visitors and/or other workers at risk 
  • Appropriate control measures to minimise risk in accordance with organisations procedures 
  • Protocols for care after exposure to blood or other body fluids as required 
  • Remove spills in accordance with the policies and procedures of the organisation er body fluids as required 
  • Minimise contamination of materials, equipment and instruments by aerosols and splatter 
  • Separate and maintain clean and contaminated zones 
  • Confine records, materials and medicaments to a well-designated clean zone 
  • Confine contaminated instruments and equipment to a well-designated contaminated zone

Clinical Placement   Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.  

 

Important information regarding Assessment Tasks:

You are permitted to have 2 attempts at a simulated practical assessment and 1 resit at theory assessment for this course. 

Resubmissions are not automatic and will only be approved at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, after consultation with the teacher.

All resubmissions must be completed and submitted no more than 7 days after your work has been assessed.
