Overview of Assessment
To successfully to complete this course the student is required to pass written assessment tasks and demonstrate skills and ability by completing practical tasks to aerospace standards.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment 1 - Laboratory Practical
This assessment task will evaluate the nature of a chopped-strand random spray lay-up fibre composite material. This laboratory will examine the composition ratio of fibre to matrix after manufacture and its flexural behaviour and strength.
This laboratory should be of two hours duration.
The report that you will write will be of approximately 1500 words and should follow the layout as indicated in Guidelines for Writing Laboratory Reports that can be found in the students resource drive (S-Drive), S:\Aerospace Students\2011\Semester Two 2011\AERO5394 Aerospace Materials 2\George Zouev.
Word-process your report and submit the report in a folder as indicated in the guide.
Tabulate all data in your results section and provide full calculations in your appendix.
As this is a practical session, students must not wear thongs, sandals or open toe shoes.
The key element of this assessment task is your analysis of the results and interpretation through mathematical calculation the strengths of the materials being tested. ASTM and AS standards are to be utilised and appropriate sections quoted as the testing method.
This laboratory practical will have a weighting of 20% of the final overall assessment mark.
Assessment 2 - Final test (Closed Book)
This assessment will focus on your ability to:
- Explain the classifications, characteristics and quality requirements of adhesives used in the Aerospace Industry
- Explain and analyse the use of composites in aircraft construction and the distribution of stresses within a composite section
- Explain the classifications, characteristics and properties of plastics used in the Aerospace Industry.
The test will be comprised of multichoice, calculations and short answer style questions.
This test will have a weighting of 80% of the final overall assessment mark.
