Course Description

The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to design and implement spreadsheets and data bases to meet business application needs, using appropriate computer software packages.

On completion of this module the learner should be able to:

Learning Outcome 1Use appropriate computer software packages to produce customised spreadsheets and graphical representations, including slideshow presentations to meet business application needs.
AC 1.1.Set-up macro commands for execution within spreadsheets.
AC 1.2.Design and implement a customised spreadsheet to meet a business application need.
AC 1.3.Use all of the spreadsheet graph commands to convert spreadsheet data into graphic screen and hardcopy displays.
AC 1.4.Combine macro and graphical commands to execute slideshow displays of data in graphical format.
AC 1.5.Install and configure a spreadsheet package onto a microcomputer.

Learning Outcome 2Use appropriate computer software packages to produce customised databases to meet business application needs.
AC 2.1.List and discuss the features and uses of commercially available database packages.
AC 2.2.Install and configure a database package onto a microcomputer.
AC 2.3.Carry out interactive commands on multifile databases.
AC 2.4.Design a database for a business application.
AC 2.5.Develop simple database application programs using appropriate computer software.


Details of Learning Activities

You will be working in a computer laboratory developing/reinforcing your Spreadsheet, Database and Presentation package skills, so that you have all the Office computer skills needed to successfully complete your program and prepare for your professional career.
The total number of scheduled hours of teaching, learning and assessment involved in this course includes all planned activities (face to face workshops, external visits, and structured learning). It also covers the amount of effort necessary to undertake, evaluate and complete all assessment requirements, observation of work performance, discussions, one on one and group assessment sessions with students.


Teaching Schedule

Session 6-15: This unit is partly co-delivered with COSC6083C (Operate Computing Packages) Excel spreadsheet (weeks 5-10) and Access database (Weeks 11-15). Refer course guide for COSC6082C.
Session 16 Remaining assessment criteria are covered and practiced. AC 1.3-1.5 and 2.1-2.2.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this module will consist of the following:

Practical demonstration of computer skills per tests, including some written test answers.


Assessment Tasks

Session 10: Excel Test: co-assessed with ICAU2006B Excel assessment AT 4  (Open book) 25%
Session 15: Access Test: co-assessed with ICAU2006B Excel assessment AT 5 (Open book)  30%
Session 17: Test covering remaining items (Open book) 45%

This is a curriculum unit. You need to achieve sufficient marks to achieve a pass. Only the above listed assessments contribute to your final result.

Feedback will be provided throughout the course.

ATN 3 – CA1999 test AC1.1 (20%); AC 1.4 (5%) & AC 2.1 (20%).

Late submission:

If you require an Extension of Submittable Work (assignments, reports or project work etc.) for 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) and have valid reasons, you must complete and lodge an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the Senior Educator/ Program Manager.
The application must be lodged no later than one working day before the official due date. You will be notified within no more than 2 working days of the date of lodgement as to whether the extension has been granted.
