Course Description

This course contains some of the underpinning knowledge of a program, which designed for a person to be able to undertake design, select, install, commission, maintain and carry out repairs on advanced electronic equipment and systems.
The Knowledge and skills addressed in this course include:
• Mathematical analysis using calculus and vector techniques, and complex numbers to solve applied problems, using computer to numerically evaluate definite integral and solve non-linear equations.
 Mathematical objects such as differential equations, matrices and series, which are needed by electronic engineer.
 Fundamental concepts of alternating current, gaining an understanding of how different components behave in an AC circuit and develop skills in working with or solving problems in series and parallel AC circuit.

Learning Outcomes

Details of Learning Activities

Participate in individual small research projects in designated areas of underpinning knowledge including:

• Theory of Calculus and Vector mathematical concepts, which may include calculations using derivative, integration and vector equation to solve mathematical problems.

• Theory of differential equations, series, matrices mathematical concepts, which may include manipulation of mathematical table and application of differential equation to electrical signal.

• Measure of the period, frequency, peak-to-peak and rms. value of a sinusoidal voltage waveform.

• Series and parallel AC circuits containing resistance, inductance and capacitance connected to a steady-state sinusoidal voltage source.

• Phasor diagrams to show the phase relationship between voltage and current in a pure resistance, a pure inductance and a pure capacitance. Perform measurement in practical activities to confirm the above calculation.

Participate in individual and team problem solving scenarios/role plays/ case studies dealing with a range of practical exercises related to:

• Development of skills in using computer software to numerically evaluate various equations, and testing procedures to verify the performance, diagnosis and debugging of faults in the program.

• The concept of series and parallel resonance circuits.

• Determination of the secondary voltage of a transformer given the primary voltage and turns ratio

• Determination the primary current of a transformer given the secondary current and turns ratio.

Participate in supervised workshop practice in simulated workplace environment, including:

• Application of simulation program to determine the electrical quantities for a given electrical circuits.

• Application simulation program to analyse the behaviours of series and parallel resonant circuits
