Course Description
This year long course covers the skills and knowledge required to record, edit, combine and incorporate sound into multimedia presentations and prepare sound media for different platforms.

Learning Outcomes
Details of Learning Activities
Classes will involve theoretical and practical exercises focussing on the fundamentals of sound production, and the conceptual sound design of students’ major projects.
Teaching Schedule
Week 2 - Sound introduction:: what is sound, what is music, critical listening skills, important acoustic terms.
Week 3 - Recording:: recording sources, identifying suitable sounds, analogue audio, microphones and recording equipment, audio signal types and levels.
Week 4 - Digital audio:: how digital audio works, digital recording and editing, digital sound formats and file types.
Week 5 - Sound composition:: compositonal concepts, more digital audio editing, adding effects and multi track mixing.
Week 6 - Sound and the moving image:: audio visual concepts, listening modes, audio visual flow, sonic logic, dialogue, atmos, foley and synchronisation.
Week 7 - Appropriate sound effects:: sound effects design, sourcing and production. Analyse examples.
Week 8 - Music:: Garageband and sequencing class exercise.
Week 9 - Minor Projects:: Completion of minor sound projects.
Week 10 - Sound Design Concepts 1:: Looking at examples of good and bad sound design. Analysing what is involved in sound production for Major Projects.
Week 11 - Sound Design Concepts 2:: Analysis of examples, major projects: limitations and scope of projects.
Week 12 - Sound Design Concepts 3:: Major Projects: Consideration of sound for rough ideas for major projects. Coincides with Major Projects Assignment 01.
Week 13 - Sound Design Concepts 4:: Examples of sound charting / storyboarding, major projects: Develop sound design chart for major project. Coincides with Major Projects Assignments 02 and 03.
Week 14 - Sound Design Concepts 5:: Major Projects: First draft of sound design chart / storyboard due.
Week 15 - Sound Design Concepts 6:: Analysis of example of production schedule, major projects: work out technical requirements that will need to be undertaken to produce sound for project.
Week 16 - Sound Design Concepts 7:: Major Projects: Work on sound for animatic for Major Projects.
Week 17 - Sound Design Concepts 8:: Major Projects: Complete sound for animatic for Major Projects.
Week 18 - Presentation of Major Project.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment takes the form of practical class-based exercises in different aspects of recording, manipulating and editing sound, which account for 50% of assessment. The other 50% is based on the integration of sound into the student’s Major Project.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment will Assessment takes the form of several practice-based assignment related to the development stages required in the completion of a major project. Assessment will also take the form of a series of briefings conducted by the student throughout the year, and will be closely aligned to the assessment schedule of the Major Project class.
