Course Description

Students will develop a well-balanced coverage of electronic modeling concepts to analyse the behaviour of the electronic circuit with emphasis on BJT and FET amplifiers. Students will develop practical skills in electrical measurement, testing and problem solving related to electronic circuits in practical activities and work simulation projects.

This learning unit is one of a group of units designed to collectively meet underpinning skill & applied knowledge essential for developing the following Core Competency –

Performance Criteria:

* Diagnosis of faults is planned and prepared to ensure OH&S policies and procedures are followed and the work is appropriately sequenced in accordance with requirements

* Appropriate personnel are consulted to ensure the work is coordinated effectively with others involved on the work site

* Systems and apparatus faults are checked against requirements

* Materials necessary to complete the work are obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked against requirements

* Tools, equipment and testing devices needed to carry out the work are obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked for correct operation and safety

* Preparatory work is checked to ensure no unnecessary damage has occurred and complies with requirements

* OH&S policies and procedures are followed

* Reported fault(s) are confirmed and the normal function of systems and associated apparatus is ascertained in accordance with requirements

* Systems are checked as being isolated where necessary using specified testing procedures

* Systems and associated apparatus faults are diagnosed in accordance with requirements, without damage or distortion to the surrounding environment or services

* Contingency measures are managed and implemented in accordance with established procedures to ensure the system operates as intended or designed

* Where applicable, appropriate personnel and resources are determined and co-ordinated to effect rectification of fault(s)

* Unplanned events or conditions are responded to in accordance with established procedures

* On-going checks of the quality of the work are undertaken in accordance with established procedures

* OH&S policies and procedures are followed

* Systems and associated apparatus are isolated, where necessary , in accordance with established procedures

* Unplanned events or conditions are responded to in accordance with established procedures

* Approval is obtained in accordance with established procedures from appropriate personnel before any contingencies are implemented

* Systems and associated apparatus are tested to ensure safety of the installation

Learning Outcomes



Details of Learning Activities

Participate in individual small research projects in designated areas of underpinning knowledge including:
• The operation and application theory of BJT/ FET amplifiers in various circuit configurations, which may include calculations for various amplifier parameters but not limited to: voltage & current gain, input & output resistance and power.

Participate in individual and team problem solving scenarios/ case studies dealing with a range of practical exercises.
• Skills in selecting most appropriate amplifier based on application criteria; construction of amplifier circuits; test, measure and confirm the AC operating conditions of BJT and FET amplifiers in various configurations and with specified bias; stabilisation and feedback using oscilloscope and other currently available measuring instruments.

Participate in supervised workshop practice in simulated workplace environment, including:
• The design and construction of BJT/ FET amplifier circuits, development of testing procedure to verify the performance specification, diagnosis of faults in the systems and completion of commissioning process.
• The design, construction and commissioning of amplifier circuits with feedback, diagnosis of faults in the systems and repair the fault.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment requirements include

• Attendance and satisfactory completion of prescribed practical exercises, which may be scheduled during the day or evening depending on the demand.
• Evidence of participation in and satisfactory completion of work simulation projects.
• Satisfactory completion of class assignment work
• Progressive tests
• Timely submission and standard presentation for all assessment material / documentation


Assessment Tasks

1. 3 Progressive written assessments (50%)
2. 2 work-simulation projects on design, construction, testing and commissioning of BJT/FET amplifiers. Individual performance and reports are compulsory (40%)
3. Scheduled Practical Exercises (must pass all practical exercises)
4. Written assignments with given task-documents. Verbal questioning on the submitted assignments is required. (10%)
To pass this course, student must complete all the scheduled practical exercises and written assignments with satisfactory verbal questioning, the project work to specifications, pass the written examinations and submit well documented project reports.
