Course Description

This course focuses on the leadership and the personal and professional competence which is needed to manage at a senior level. It is equally relevant to leadership of a small to medium sized organisation and to leading a significant unit of activity in a The course draws on what you have learnt from earlier courses within the program of International Trade, specifically MKTG7214L Conduct Intercultural Negotiations & BUSM6034L Management Skills

Students will participate in a range of activities including working in teams that are either self selected or arranged. Overview of Assessment

Students will demonstrate leadership through using the concepts of culture to recognise, respect and reconcile differences to become great leaders. Students will participate in a range of activities including in teams that are self selected and teams they are arranged into. They are expected to participate in online learning and assessment as well as class based activities.

Competency Based Assessment
Students will be provided with more than one opportunity to demonstrate competence. Competency based assessment is detailed below in “Assessment methods” and “Assessment Tasks”.

Assessment Methods
The student must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.
Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, online and in class exercises, written tests, practical problem solving exercises, presentations and practical tests. Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Assessment 1 Case Study reporting – 30%. Presentations due throughout the semester.
In Team of 2 - students will be assigned a case study from the prescribed text book “International Management”.
Students will report on case studies from the text book. Presenting Students will prepare their findings and answer questions from the book in a Power Point Presentation format to the class. Non-presenting students are expected to have read the case study in advance and ask questions or debate issues. 20% of the mark will be for the presentation. 10% of the mark will be for participation and engagement of audience in class during presentations.

Assessment 2 Major Assignment – 40%. (1500+ words) Report Due Friday 27th of March2009. 4.30pm level 13 Box
Individual Assessment
Research: Choose an Australian business leader. Provide background information on the person/ organization or business. Discuss why do you believe your chosen leader is a good leader, and what others think of your chosen person or organization or business and why? Discuss dilemmas they face in the current global economic climate including respect, cultural differences and moral stand. It is expected that you use at least 2-4 books as reference in this assignment, plus websites, and any other relevant research material.


Assessment 3 Group Assignment – 30% EVENT 4th of June 2009 report/reflection paper due Friday 5th of June 2009 4.30pm level 13 Box
Students to organize an EVENT. 10% of the mark will be for completing the task, and 20% will be awarded for your 1000 word reflection on working in teams. Each meeting is to be formally recorded by Agenda and Minutes and included in your reflection paper. Attendance is mandatory at the class function/event.
ALL REFERENCING Must be correct.

EVENT: Minutes of the meetings will be posted on the DLS Online Learning HUB.


As you have more than one opportunity (Assessment) to pass each element of competency, you will not be given the opportunity to re-sit any assignment.

Other Information

Students who fail an assessment on the first attempt will be given a second chance to resubmit the assessment for a grade of no more than Pass (50%). Students who fail on the second attempt will be able to re-enroll in the course in the following semester.
