Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

EDX060 – Prepare basic mechanical and structural engineering drawings to AS 1100 (can be undertaken concurrently)
EDX150 – Use standard computer applications (can be undertaken concurrently)
This unit will be assessed in the classroom environment using holistic assessment based on typical workplace activities.
Assessment of this unit will involve completion of:
• A series of small assignments assessed in class and covering the basic elements of CAD drawing to produce drawings to industry standards.
• A 1 hour competency test at mid-semester and assessed in class.

Course Description

This unit covers the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a standard CAD software package, using basic features, in order to prepare simple engineering drawings to AS 1100

1.1 The basic commands are used to construct shapes consisting of lines, circles, arcs, polygons, ellipses, tangents and text of specified sizes.

Customise a template drawing

Performance Criteria:

2.1 A template-drawing file is customised to specific drawing office standards.

Modify existing CAD drawings

Performance Criteria:

3.1 A specified drawing can be opened and specified revisions made.

Operate CAD software for drawing initialisation

4.1 The CAD system is entered using the standard procedure.
4.2 The functions of the screen display areas can be explained.
4.3 The basic parameters are set in preparation for the drafting process.

Perform the appropriate exit and shutdown procedures

5.1 The correct exit procedure from the CAD system is observed.
5.2 The correct shutdown procedure for all hardware in use is observed.

Plot a CAD drawing

Performance Criteria:

6.1 The plotting device is loaded correctly with paper.
6.2 The relevant plotting device is selected.
6.3 The relevant plotted paper size is selected.
6.4 The drawing is orientated correctly on the drawing paper.
6.5 The plotted drawing complies with AS 1100 with respect to line thickness and text sizes.
6.6 The plotted drawing shows coloured entities as required.

Element:

Produce engineering drawings to AS 1100 using efficient procedures

Performance Criteria:

7.1 Drawings are completed of engineering components and assemblies to AS 1100.
7.2 Efficient drafting practices are employed in order to maximize productivity.
7.3 Drawings are produced to the particular drawing office standards.

Save and transfer a drawing file to a specified drive or directory

Performance Criteria:

8.1 Drawings are saved to a specified location on the office system and with a specified name.

Details of Learning Activities

Teacher Directed:
Teacher led face to face and one-on-one instruction using overheads and notes covering the basic concepts of CAD drawing and the operation of the CAD software. This will cover each element in designated areas of underpinning knowledge and include:
• Basic operation of CAD software.
o Creating a drawing file.
o Saving a drawing file
o Setting up directories
o Setting up drawing file parameters
o Saving settings
o Placing elements
o Deleting elements
o Modifying elements
o Customising a drawing file
o Manipulating elements
o Plotting a drawing file.
o Compressing a drawing file
o Saving drawing file to specific directories
o Transferring files and system data
o Using correct exit and shut down procedures for the CAD software.
• Producing basic engineering drawings to AS 1100 and industry standards.
Simulated Workplace Activities
In a computer lab using Computer Aided Drafting software, using appropriate standard symbols and terminology to AS 1100 prepare two dimensional drawings of simple engineering parts based on industry standards and include:
o Construction and modification of basic shapes
o Preparing and A3 and A2 proforma
o A flange detail
o A screwed steel flange
o North Points
o Section Marks
o Mild steel bracket
o Mild steel clamp.
o A survey drawing.
Student Self Directed
Using the Internet students will research AS 1100 from Standards Online to obtain an understanding of engineering principles, conventions and drawing practices.
Students will be encouraged to view and analyse a variety of real-life projects (drawings) to increase their understanding of the standard expected in an engineering drawing office.

Competency Tests:
Your course coordinator/tutor will give you specific test instructions for the semester of your study, including:
• Date and time of test
• Any other specific requirements
However, it is expected the competency tests will be to complete a selected detail using a CAD system to industry standards.
• 1 hour duration.
