Course Description

This course teaches current best practices for creating web pages. Page design is accomplished with a graphics application. Use of such an application and basic graphic design skills are part of the course. Page construction (structure and content) is accomplished using an HTML editor, and all layout and presentation is developed separately using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Emphasis is placed on building to web standards.
Inclusion of media and scripting is also part of the course. While emphasis is given to still images (knowledge of appropriate file types, compression, etc), techniques for including other media are also taught. Use of JavaScript for simple dynamic elements (eg drop-down menus) is also taught.

The uses of HTML on and off the internet are described.

Principles of design and navigation are correctly applied to the context of web page viewing.

Differences between page layout languages versus document content description are outlined.

File types for images and other data are chosen to suit the intended viewing environment.

HTML specifications and extension types are named and a suitable HTML level or DTD is chosen for the current task.

Types of web authoring software are identified and selected in accordance with the type of authoring task and workplace procedures.

Performance Criteria:

Images, sound and other referenced files are sourced and optimised for download and display.

Web authoring, conversion, or text editing software is used to prepare pages incorporating text with images and video, sound, scripts or programming, according to design brief.

Completed HTML pages are saved to hard disk with the appropriate file names.

Raw HTML is checked for obvious redundancies and omissions, and enhanced if necessary with recent HTML extensions, alt tags, etc.

Validate and prepare for distribution

Performance Criteria:

Pages are validated with suitable syntax parsing and rules checking software.

HTML is corrected in response to validation reports until a clean validation is achieved at chosen level.

Pages and associated files are uploaded to server or transferred to other media and prepared for access.

External links are checked for functionality in their usual locations.

All classes take place in PC labs. Most teaching occurs as mini-lecture/demonstration followed by student exercises in an interactive environment. You will also be given out of class exercises to practise new skills.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment consists of three practical assignments, the first two completed in class and the third over an extended period, plus three written tests of underpinning knowledge. To be deemed competent a student must satisfactorily complete the practical assignments and achieve a score of 50% on the written tests. Additionally, a grade will be given based on the written test marks, but satisfactory completion of practical components is a requirement to be given a grade of PA or better.


Assessment Tasks

The practical skills tests involve creation of one or more web pages. They will be assessed against the performance criteria for each of the three elements of competency.

The written tests (including the final exam) test underpinning knowledge. These will be online tests in multiple choice format. The first two tests are worth 25% of your final mark each, the exam is worth 50% of your final mark.
