Course Description

This unit of competency covers the management of a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. It focuses on the application of project management skills and the management to meet timelines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project.

.1 Action is taken to ensure that project team members are clear about their responsibilities and the requirements of the project

3.2 Support is provided to project team members, especially with regard to special needs, to ensure that the quality of the expected outcomes of the project and documented timelines are met

3.3 Required record keeping systems are established and maintained throughout the project

3.4 Plans for managing project finances, human, physical and technical resources and quality are implemented and monitored

3.5 Project reports are completed and forwarded as required to stakeholders

3.6 Risk management is undertaken as required to ensure project outcomes are met

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards. Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment activities to their teacher/assessor. Feedback will be provided throughout the course.

Participants are required to complete three assessment tasks.
Each Assessment task (Units 1, 2 and 3) is 30%
Class Participation in a presentation is awarded 10%

Prepare a full project plan (of 800 –1000 words) for a specific project for your case study organisation, or a project which could be presented to your case study organisation. It should represent a project proposal to the business manager and any other relevant manager, from you as the project manager.

Include in your proposal:

- Definition of the Project (Activity 1.5)

- Brief analysis of data collected and action plan (Activity 1.7)

- Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Project Specifications (Activity 1.8)

- Timeliness (may include either Gantt chart or PERT diagram, (Activities 1.9 and 1.10) and Critical Path identification.

- Resource Requirements (Activity 1.11)

- Costing Plan (Activity 1.12)

- Planning Summary worksheet or equivalent including responsibilities for each component or step (Activity 1.13)

- alternatives proposed, with recommendation made by yourself for preferred option (Activity 1.14)


Report must show understanding of:

- Planning documentation including work breakdown structure, Gantt charts/PERT diagrams, summary worksheet, costing plan

- Elements of a good project plan, including quality, timeliness and cost guidelines;

- The concept of project life cycle, project definition, development of project objectives

competencies (incorporating part of Activity 2.4 and 2.6 responses)

- resource requirements inventory and strategy (incorporating Activity 2.8)

- budgeting (incorporating Activity 2.10)


Report must show understanding of:

- project team skills and team selection

- administration tasks and organisational framework

- resource requirements and how to achieve them

- the budgeting system for the project.

This is the final report on the project from Assessment Task 1 and 2. Your report should be 1800 – 2000 words and include:

- achievements compared to original goals

- financial accounting (incorporate Activity 3.1, 3.2 and 3.4 responses)

- administrative evaluation (incorporating Activity 3.6 responses)

- communication networks involved and their effectiveness (incorporate Activity 3.8)

- team performance – confidential comments on how team operated, problems encountered

- issues/tasks to follow up

- termination process

- recommendations

- special acknowledgements to team members

- establishing standards through a range of charts, such as milestones, budget control

- monitoring performance using reports, inspections, review, testing, auditing
