Course Description

This unit of competency sets out the knowledge and skills required to create 2D and 3D wire frame and surface models and their representation on working drawings for engineering applications.

5  Methods for dealing with unexpected situations are selected on the basis of safety and specified work outcomes.

Performance Criteria:

1  OH&S and environmental requirements for a given work area are obtained and understood.
2  Established OH&S requirements and risk control measures and procedures in preparation for the work area are followed.
3  Safety hazards which have not previously been identified are documented and risk control measures devised and implemented in consultation with appropriate personnel.
4  The extent of drawing task is determined from documentation or reports and from discussion with appropriate personnel.
5  Appropriate personnel are consulted to ensure the work is coordinated effectively with others involved at the work site.
6  Resources and equipment needed for the drawing task are obtained in accordance with enterprise procedures and checked for correct operation and safety.

Details of Learning Activities

You will be asigned to draw mechanical components using Advanced 2D techniques and 3D wire frame, surface modelling and solid modelling. Class works and competency test will be used for assessement. AUTOCAD software package will be used  for the Advanced 2D CAD techniques  and SOLIDWORKS packages will be used for 3D modelling.

Class exercises and lecture materials will be provided. Students will be assigned daily class exercises and expected to complete the tasks during class time.

Assessment Tasks

This is a competency-based course. In Class Progressive exercises, you will be assessed on the skills you developed throughout the course, in particular your ability to understand computer aided drawing systems for the purpose of drawing in 2D and 3D to represent engineering applications.

Competency test will be conducted in the lab under supervision. 


Assessment Matrix

Class Exercises :-  50 Marks.

Competency Test :- 50 Marks.

Other Information

It is essential that students attend most if not all classes. Previous statistical data has indicated that students who attend more than 80% of their classes have passed this subject.
