Course Description

This unit covers the development of basic keyboard skills using touch typing techniques.

Performance Criteria:

Workplace, furniture and equipment are adjusted to suit the ergonomic requirements of the user.

Work organisation meets organisational and occupational health and safety for computer operation.


Learning Outcomes


The expectations are that students will achieve a speed of 45 wpm with 98% accuracy using correct technique. This is consistent with the level of responsibility of an entry-level position in the workplace.


Details of Learning Activities

Students will complete practical exercises in class to help build their speed and accuracy whilst meeting occupational health and safety guidelines.

Overview of Assessment

Students will complete speed, accuracy and technique tests under supervision.


Assessment Tasks

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent.

Students will be given the opportunity to complete five, five minute typing tests and are required to use correct tehnique. Students will be observed by the assessor whilst completing tests to ensure they use correct technique - Element of Competency; Use safe work practices & Identify and develop keyboard skills. These tests will be scheduled for second semester.

Students who have reached the expected learning outcomes for Use safe work practices & Identify and develop keyboard skills will be given two opportunities to show competency in Week 17 of Semester 1.

Students will be given four proofreading exercises to complete throughout the year as indicated on the course schedule - Element of Competency, Check accuracy.
