Course Description

This unit covers the maintenance of vendor mediation devices designed to maintain the integrity of network support systems and software. The unit applies to both system platforms and applications. This unit may apply to switching, transmission and radio (both fixed and mobile) network and the various transmission paths i.e. cable, optic fibre, radio, microwave and satellite. This unit applies to computer systems including Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs).

Details of Learning Activities

This unit covers upgrading and maintaining computers, computer devices and peripherals and installing, maintaining and configuring software. It encompasses safe working practices, installing and testing the upgrading components, locating faults in hardware components, replacing faulty subsystems, installing and testing the operating system and application software, testing functionality, rectifying malfunctions, following written and oral instruction and procedures and applying appropriate customer relations.


Teaching Schedule

Semester I - Microsoft Windows 7

Week 1 - Lecture: Introduction Windows 7, Lecture: Installing Windows 7 , OHS procedures, Software versions are deployed
Week 2 - Lab: Upgrading to Windows 7, Lab: Migrating User Profiles ,Upgrade and maintain computer hardware and software.
Week 3 - Lecture: Deploying Windows 7, Lecture: Working with Disk and Devices, Computers and peripherals are dismantled as needed
to find and rectify faults
Week 4 - Lab: Installing Windows 7, Lab: Capturing a Reference Image, Upgrading components are fitted and
computer/peripheral apparatus is reassembled
Week 5 - Lecture: Connecting to a Network, Lecture: Sharing Resources,
Week 6 - Lab: Deploying a Captured Image, Lab: Working with Disks, Malfunctions are rectified using latest software versions
Week 7 - Lecture: Working with Applications, Lecture: Managing and Monitoring Windows 7 Performance, Operating system, including device drivers and application software are tested in preparation Week 8 - Lab: Configuring Network Connections, Lab: Working with Shares, Upgrading and maintenance is documented and
appropriate person(s) notified
Week 9 - Lecture: Working with Workgroups and Domains, Lecture: Securing Windows
Week 10 - Lab: Working with Printers, Lab: Configuring Applications
Week 11 - Lecture: Administering Windows 7, Lecture: Using Mobile Computers, Written justification is produced for hardware
software upgrading and maintenance
Week 12 - Lab: Managing and Monitoring Performance, Lab: Working with Workgroups and Domains, Redundant files are removed and disposed of or
archived
