Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to plan, prepare and set up exhibits of textile products.

3.1 Textile products are selected and prepared for exhibition
3.2 Suitable method of cataloguing and labeling products for display are identified, undertaken and documented accurately
3.3 Transfer, installation, hanging and arranging of works is overseen to ensure presentation and aesthetic requirements are achieved, and according to OH&S practices.
3.4 Problems arising during set up are resolved and documented for future reference

4.1 Exhibition is introduced and explained to the audience using appropriate communication tools and techniques
4.2 Audience response to exhibition is monitored and feedback received and responded to
4.3 Exhibition is closed and dismantling and transfer of displays and equipment is coordinated
4.4 Event is finalised with venue management, including payment arrangements

5.1 Audience response to presentation is used to evaluate overall effectiveness of exhibition
5.2 Selected products, display methods and choice of location are analysed and strengths and weaknesses evaluated

Learning Outcomes


This unit applies to planning and undertaking exhibition of textile products such as printed fabrics, tapestries, woven or knitted products or conceptual pieces.

Products may be exhibited in local outlets such as galleries, shops, art centres or client premises, and may include digital folios and displays.


Details of Learning Activities

A range of activities will be undertaken in and out of class sessions. Students are expected to participate in group work, written reports, presentations , site visits and attend guest lectures.

Overview of Assessment

Practical demonstration of competence will be in the form of carrying out set tasks and activities towards the planning of an exhibition, documentation of the exhibition process and the mounting of the exhibition.

Group discussion and collaboration of relevant issues will be required.

Students will be involved in peer assessment tasks and will be actively involved in determining the assessment criteria

Fundraising and Sponsorship 30%
Students are expected to work in teams to resource requirements and sponsorship for the event . Group and individual participation will be expected.
Assessment criteria will be determined by all students at the start of semester and final feedback will be presented in marking week.

Exhibition Analysis - group task 30%

Provide a PPT presentation and a printed summary of your findings. 
Each group must  visit 3 different venues where work is exhibited
a shop, that displays and sells textile products,
a gallery - this may include major galleries such as the NGV or smaller artist run spaces.
a trade show.

Please ensure  that you answer all the following questions
What is the difference between each venue ?
What is the purpose of each ?
Who is the intended audience?
What is the overall style ?
How may the above factors affect the choice of display methods ?

Include name of each venue and location
What is the process for application to the venue/ event ?

For each venue provide a brief description of the following information:
venue layout and how it is suited to the works on display
Use of lighting and props/stands etc.

Sumit  your report and include any catalogues, invitations or visual references you may have sourced.

You will presnt your findings in class.

Promotional package 40%

Package to include the following:
Artist’s statement
High quality photographs of work for catalogue and media releases.
300 dpi on CD or flash drive - Clearly labeled with your name, media, title of work.
Ability to meet deadlines.

The Diploma of Arts (STDP & SPD) graduate exhibition has now been conducted for approximately 25 years.

The Diploma of Arts (Screen Print Design) joined this exhibition in 1995 and in 2010 Diploma of Textile Design and Development joined to make it a combined  event.

 This exhibition is intended to launch the graduates into the  design and arts Industry and the wider community. At the same time the exhibition should promote RMIT and the Textile Diplomas.

Rules and regulations:

  • The exhibition will be open to all graduating students - full time or part time
  • All work to be exhibited must be work that has been submitted for assessment.
  • All major areas of course work can be exhibited, ie. screen printing, textiles, paper or other mediums, weaving, machine knitting, tapestry, textile technology, drawing, design etc.
  • Work exhibited must be of the highest standard in design and technique.
  • Work to be exhibited must be submitted to a selection panel, consisting of a staff member from each subject area, as well as where possible, a representative of the industry.
  • Articles for exhibition must be in original condition.
  • Students exhibiting must participate in the following;
    planning,
    fundraising and sponsorship
    providing mailing lists
    photograph works for catalogues
    concept design for invitations and event
    attending and promoting the exhibition at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition
