Course Description

This unit covers the use of drawings, diagrams, equipment and cable schedules and manuals as they apply to the various electrotechnology work functions. It encompasses the rudiments for communicating with schematic, wiring and mechanical diagrams and equipment and cable/connection schedules, manuals, site and architectural drawings and plans showing the location of services, apparatus, plant and machinery.

Practical drawing exercises and project work which include the followings:
1. Architectural drawings : -
• Use standard drawing scales to determine the actual lengths represented by dimensions on an architectural drawing
• Read and interpret a floor plan to determine the location of the electrical/electronics/communication accessories and appliances
• Use Australian standard symbols on a floor plan to show the location of the accessories and appliances as detailed in an electrical schedule.
2. Electrical drawings:
• Identify and distinguish between block, circuit diagram
• Identify standard symbols used in representing components on electrical/electronic circuit diagrams.
• Identify cable type, origin and route from a cable schedule
3. Circuit diagrams :
• List the conventions used in and the features of circuit diagrams
• Sketch basic circuit diagrams
• Identify a range of symbols from Australian Drawing Standard
• AS/NZS 1102
• Connect equipment according to a circuit diagram and confirm the operation of the circuit.
4. Mechanical drawing:
• Describe the conventions used in drawings of mechanical components.
• List the basic abbreviations and symbols used in drawing of mechanical components.
• Identify mechanical components and their specifications from information in a drawing of the component
5. Freehand sketching :
• Layout a drawing of a mechanical component using engineering drawing convention.
• Draw freehand a mechanical component showing all information needed for its manufacturer/fabrication.

You are required to complete the following  assessment tasks:

Drawing Task - 70%
Task 1 : (drawing work) 15%
Practical drawing work to demonstrate the following task:
• Interpret various drawings, diagrams, schedules and manuals correctly
• Identifying drawing, diagrams, schedules and manuals relevant to the work to be undertaken

Task 2 :(drawing work ) 25%
• Interpret various circuit drawings, diagrams, schedules and manuals correctly
• To demonstrate the ability to use CAD to produce circuit drawing according to specification.

Task 3 :(drawing work assignment) 30%
Assignment works to demonstrate the ability to draw according to the specification using specified method. 

OHS Task -30%

Assessment task 1 (assignment 1): 10%
Written assignment to demonstrate an understanding of basic legal requirements covering occupational health and safety in the workplace and requirements for personal safety in the workplace working safely with electrical tools or equipment

Assessment task 2 (assignment 2): 10%
Written assignment to demonstrate an understanding of identifying potential workplace hazards and suggested measures for accident prevention

Assessment task 3 (Practical demonstration in simulated workplace): 10%
working safely with electrical tools or equipment
emergency procedures for the rescue of an electric shock victim equipment
emergency first aid for an electric shock victim

All assessment tasks need to be succesfully completed to demonstrate competence.

  • This course is delivered in a cluster (Drawing and OH&S) in conjunction with EEET6749C and OHTH5464C (Use drawings, diagrams, schedules and manuals and Apply OHS practices in the workplace). All the learning and assessment activities will include the components of both competencies UEENEEE007B and UEENEEE001B.
  • In this cluster (EEET6749C and OHTH5464C), minimum student directed hours are 28 in addition to 32 scheduled teaching hours.
  • Student directed hours involve completing activities such as reading online resources, assignments, project work, individual student-teacher course-related consultation and writing reports.
