Course Description

This unit covers the design of printed circuit boards. The unit encompasses application of knowledge of electronic circuits, components, component assemblies, developing alternative design schemes based on design brief, customer relations and documenting designs.

1. Prepare to design PCB assembly

Performance Criteria:

1.1 OHS processes and procedures for a given work area are obtained and understood. Prepare to design PCB assembly
1.2 Established OHS risk control measures and procedures are followed in preparation for the work.
1.3 The extent of the proposed electronic circuits and sub assemblies is determined from the design brief or in consultations with appropriate person(s)
1.4 Design development work is planned to meet scheduled timelines in consultation with others involved on the work site.

2. Develop PCB assembly design

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Knowledge of electronic components and sub assemblies and standards are applied to the design. Develop PCB assembly design
2.2 Alternative arrangements for the design are considered based on the requirements outlined in the design brief.
2.3 Safety, functional and budget considerations are incorporated in the design.
2.4 PCB design draft is checked for compliance with the design brief and design rules.
2.5 PCB design is documented for submission to appropriate person(s) for approval
2.6 Solutions to unplanned situation are provided consistent with organisation policy.

3. Provide detailed assembly drawings and artwork files ready for production

Performance Criteria:

3.1 PCB design is presented and explained to client representative and/or other relevant person(s).
3.2 Requests for alterations to the design are negotiated with relevant person(s) within the constraints of organisation policy.
3.3 Final design is documented and approval obtained from appropriate person(s).

3.4 Quality of work is monitored against personal performance agreement and/or established organizational or professional standards

Details of Learning Activities

This unit shall be demonstrated using a representative range of simulated printed circuit boards in relation to designing PCBs for different component population densities and related sub assemblies.
• Simulation of PCBs using AutoCAD software
• Simulation of Various Electronics circuits/blocks using AutoCAD software
• Analogue and digital circuits and components
Generic terms used throughout this Vocational Standard shall be regarded as part of the Range Statement in which competency is demonstrated.

Overview of Assessment

This is a progressive assessment, the students are required to undertake summative assessments as follows:
• Drawing assessments
• CAD design simulation projects

This course is delivered in a cluster (Engineering Software) in conjunction with "EEET6764C Design printed circuit board" and "ISYS5662C Use engineering applications software". All the learning and assessment activities will include the components of both competencies UEENEEH081B and UEENEED004B.

In this cluster (ISYS5662C and EEET6764C), minimum student directed hours are 44 in addition to 36 scheduled teaching hours.

Student directed hours involve completing activities such as reading online resources, assignments, project work, individual student-teacher course-related consultation, organized industrial visits, writing reflective journals, lab reports.
