Course Description
This unit covers identifying and handling various electronic components from basic types to more advanced types including IC and sub-assemblies. It also covers the physical features and primary characteristic of components. The completion of this unit will be prepared for future development on electronic component placement machines or apparatus. It encompasses working safely, problem solving procedures, including the use of voltage, current and resistance measuring devices, providing solutions derived from measurements, calculations, handling and interfacing to predictable problems of components in electronic circuits.

Learning Outcomes
Details of Learning Activities
This unit covers understanding of various types of electronic components including types are resistors, inductors, capacitors, diodes, transistor and up to an integrated circuits. Such components are then selected to the applications of printed circuit boards, sub-assemblies, and mounting/enclosing, connection and termination hardware. Factors of physical dimensions, electrical parameters, power rating and electronic characteristics, polarity of power supplies, and sensitivity of electrostatic charges are required to be compared between the manufacturer’s data and circuit requirement. Instead of using electronic / electrical instruments to measure the component values, Methods of identifying and marking of component ratings are practiced until they are recognised. It encompasses working safely, power circuit problems solving processes, including the use of voltage, current and resistance measuring devices, providing solutions derived from measurements and calculations to predictable problems in multiple path circuit.
Classroom tutorial activities: to consolidate and hence apply the concepts of selecting, identifying, calculating and determining for power rating and other electrical aspects, recognizing the marking, testing and fault finding for appropriate electronic components in a specific circuit board.
Practical exercises: to demonstrate the use of appropriate methodology to select, identify and apply suitable electronic components in a safety concerned environment.
Work simulated activities: to recognize the identification of types and values of the electronic components. To measure with an appropriate electronic instrument when there is any doubt about discrepancies between the marked value and the actual value of a specific electronic component.
It is expected that students will require approximately 20% of course hours to be allocated for independent study to do data exploration, practicing recognition and identification of electronic component , testing and problem solving activities to the electronic components on a specific electronic circuit board.
