Course Description

This unit covers the application of skills and knowledge in taking responsibility for ones own competency development. It encompasses understanding the structure of a competency development plan, participating the development of a personal competency development plan, understanding responsibilities and obligation under competency development plan, following activities for developing competency, self-monitoring competency development and meeting trainee obligations for periodic reporting of competency development

2.4 Progress in competency development is self monitored against the competency development plan.
2.5 Modifications to the personal competency development plan are made in consultation with appropriate persons.
2.6 Trainee/learners responsibility for periodic and timely reporting of competency development activities is followed.


Learning Outcomes



Details of Learning Activities

Learning and simulated work activities to demonstrate participation in development, and ability to follow a personal competency development plan.
This will include:

• Classroom group discussions to analyse a specified competency and underpinning knowledge
• Consultations with a teacher to identify gaps in one’s skills and knowledge in the specified area
• Self-initiated development of a draft competency development plan
• Peer review of the draft plan
• Maintaining training diary to document training activities and achievements
• Practical demonstrations of achieved competency

Industrial Placement

This unit involves an work integrated learning activites  using procedures, information and resources typical of a workplace.
This includes:
• OHS policy and work procedures and instructions.
• Suitable work environment, facilities, equipment and materials  to undertake actual work as prescribed in this unit.

Industrial Placement:
Students in the final stage of Advanced Diploma in Electrical are encouraged to undertake an industrial practice workplacement activity, which requires student to undertake tasks within electrical, electronic or computers sisytems domain within industry.
Task may involve activities linked to auto cad, software packages, project management, electrical or electronics troubleshooting, maintenance, evaluation and alnalisys, instrumentation and process control programming and, assistance in tender submissions and evaluations etc.

Students participate in development and follow a personal competency development plan as described in  includes:
A Seeking and understanding the responsibilities under a  competency development plan.
B Seeking and understanding how to achieve the  individual competencies in the plan.
C Following all aspects of the plan diligently.
D Pursuing opportunities to develop competency.
E Self-monitoring competency development. 
F Periodically reporting competency development  activities. 
F Dealing with unplanned events by drawing on  essential knowledge and skills to provide appropriate
solutions incorporated in a holistic assessment with  the above listed items.

Assessment in this unit will include
• Written assessment – personal competency development plan
• Accumulative assessment which includes participation in class activities and maintaining training diary
• Practical demonstrations of competency in the associated specialised unit
